Bermuda Gold Cup To Host 2020 Open Match Racing Worlds

Match Racing Worlds Hamilton, Bermuda: Two weeks after announcing that the Bermuda Gold Cup will be contested Oct. 26-30, the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club and World Match Racing Tour together announce today that the celebratory 70th event will also host the 2020 Open Match Racing World Championship as sanctioned by World Sailing.

The Bermuda Gold Cup, presented by Argo Group for the benefit of the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS), rejoined the World Match Racing Tour for the 2020 season. The Bermuda Gold Cup was one of four World Championship-level events on the Tour's 19-event calendar however, due to the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, many events were forced to take place on a local capacity or were canceled. The Bermuda Gold Cup was postponed from mid-May to late October.

After consulting with the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club Executive Committee and World Sailing, the World Match Racing Tour made the decision to elevate the Bermuda Gold Cup to the Open World Championship regatta for 2020.

"We couldn't be happier that the World Match Racing Tour has selected the Bermuda Gold Cup to host the Open Match Racing World Championship," said Leatrice Oatley, chairperson of the Bermuda Gold Cup. "The Bermuda Gold Cup has always been a standard setter in the match racing arena and we're thrilled to host the Worlds for a second time. The pandemic has made it a long year for everyone around the globe, and the hurricane we just endured was a cruel joke, but a competitive Gold Cup and world championship would be a great way to flip the script positive."

"As the single World Championship event for the 2020 World Match Racing Tour, we are delighted to see the world's best competitors have committed to sailing at the Bermuda Gold Cup," said Alastair Fox, the Director of Events for World Sailing. "The event is renowned for its exceptional delivery and we are confident the 2020 Worlds will be a resounding success."

The preliminary lineup includes the reigning World Champion, New Zealander Phil Robertson who currently lives in Gothenburg, Sweden. Robertson won the worlds in 2016 and 2019 and has been sailing multihulls predominantly the past few years. But having competed at the Bermuda Gold Cup five times previously, he's well aware of the difficulty racing the International One-Design (IOD) sloop on Hamilton Harbour. -- Sean McNeil

Duthil Takes Stage 3 Win
Hugely experienced on La Solitaire du Figaro but a relative novice in the Beneteau Figaro 3 that he had only sailed four times before the start on the Baie de Saint Brieuc ten days ago, Fred Duthil (Technique Voilse/Cabinet Bourhis Generali) scored an opportunist's victory Wednesday when he took the winning gun for Stage 3 on the 51st La Solitaire de Figaro off Saint Nazaire.

At the end of an epic, extremely tiring 492 miles stage from Dunkirk, which was punctuated throughout by very light winds, strong tidal currents and many changes in wind direction Duthil - at 46 the oldest skipper in the 33 strong field - added the fourth stage win of his La Solitaire du Figaro career which spans 17 years and ten previous editions which have rewarded him with three overall podiums, second in 2007 and third twice in 2008 and 2009.

The combined effects of very light winds, tidal currents and the multiple transition zones allowed many skippers to make big recoveries from deep in the fleet, including both Duthil and series leader Armel Le Cleac'h.

At his lowest Duthil was 33rd more than 12 miles behind the leaders. At 0900hrs this morning, approaching the Baie de Quiberon, he was 32nd and nine miles behind the established leading pair Yann Elies (Queguiner Materiaux) and Britain's Sam Goodchild (Leyton).

Yann Elies and Britain's Sam Goodchild were the hardest hit by the voracious calms which were largely unexpected. The two steady leaders were among the first to head inshore, Elies baling out to fight to the finish in the pack, crossing 17th two hours and six minutes behind the winner, while Goodchild dropped to 29th nearly three hours after Duthil.

The Melges 14 and Melges 20 fleets are ready for a new event in Portovenere
Portovenere, Italy: It is already time to return to racing for the Melges 20 and Melges 14 fleets which, after a very short summer break, will resume their Championships tomorrow, proving once again to be among the most dynamic classes of a sailing scene that this year has suffered from severe slowdowns due to the pandemic.

For this new seasonal appointment, the Melges 20 and Melges 14 will make a stop in Portovenere, a location dear to Melges sailors and that in recent years has hosted exciting events of the international Melges World League circuits.

In the Gulf of Poets, close to the city of La Spezia, in a weekend that will consist of a total of four days of racing, first the Melges 20 (from Thursday 17 to Saturday 19) and then the Melges 14 (Saturday 19 and Sunday 20) will get on the water.

The regattas will be competitive, with high-level crews: among the Melges 20, in fact, all the most of the crews that marked the history of the Class will be present, including the reigning European Champions on Brontolo, the multi-champions aboard Russian Bogatyrs, and also Nika, Raya, Sease, Gone Squatching and Fremito d'Arja, to name a few. Tur..tle by Vittorio di Giacomo will not miss either, at his second regatta aboard the Melges 20.

The Melges 14 class is also confirmed as solid and growing: in Portovenere it will call sixteen helmsmen back to the starting line, who will compete to earn the title of "King of the Poets".

Brad Butterworth Joins COR 36
New Zealander Brad Butterworth (OBE) - four times America's Cup winner, America's Cup Hall of Fame inductee and multiple World Champion - one of the most respected yachting figures worldwide, has now joined Challenger of Record 36 - the organizer of the America's Cup World Series Auckland, the Christmas Race and the Prada Cup Challengers Selection Series - with the role of External and Institutional Relations Officer, to create a contact figure and facilitate a direct communication flow with the New Zealand hosts and local Authorities.

Brad's America's Cup experience is an additional asset on which COR 36 can count to deliver a successful event, and his knowledge of the country, of the people and of Auckland will greatly facilitate the decision process in many of the matters connected to the Event. Brad Butterworth declared "I have known the America's Cup Italian fraternity for close to three decades and have always appreciated their enthusiasm for the Cup and their genuine and transparent sportsmanship. It is therefore with the same enthusiasm that I have accepted COR's proposal to support them in the final phases of the organization of the America's Cup World Series Auckland, the Christmas Race and the PRADA Cup Challengers Selection Series. I am thrilled to be involved once again in the America's Cup, the yachting event I cherish the most." -- Antonio Vettese

Foiling Week 2020 Gurit Forum
Each year at Foiling Week forum everyone marvels at the increasing reach that foiling projects have in the marine industry: from boards to ocean going vessels, from high end racing yachts to more commercial marine applications.

The forum this year is moving online and will be freely visible on Foiling Week social channels (Facebook, YouTube and Linkedin) with the purpose of enhancing the interaction with the foiling community.

It's an active and engaged community: take Blair Tuke, a supremely talented Olympic gold medalist , America's cup and Ocean Race sailor that has recently formed with Peter Burling the Live Ocean Charitable Trust: we will discuss how top end sailors can make the difference and lead the way in protecting the sea we all love.

The heads of design of Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team and Emirates Team New Zealand will discuss the technological advancements of the AC75 , on the other side it will be possible to explore the trickle-down of America's cup technology into commercial vessels from the directors of Artemis Technologies and Bar Technologies.

Only a couple of months are left before the start of the legendary Vendee Globe: a hot topic will be the next design changes of the IMOCA class discussed with the president Antoine Mermod, plus designers Guillaume Verdier and Juan K.

Also, large foiling yachts and catamarans are topics discussed respectively by Mani Frers and Tommy Gonzales.

Back to racing it is easy to see that innovation in foiling is not just on the boats but also in the formats. Sail GP and the Persico 69F Cup have proved a new way is possible: Julien Di Biase and Giorgio Benussi will share their vision.

Last but not least the sustainable approach to moth design and construction by international naval universities competing in the SuMoth Challenge will be under the expert eyes of the 11Hour Racing jury.

Major Restoration of New York Yacht Club 44th Street Clubhouse Windows
44th Street Clubhouse Windows A three-phase, three-year project to restore or replace windows at the 44th Street Clubhouse in Manhattan gets underway in 2020. This major restoration of a renowned visual component of the Warren & Wetmore-designed National Historic Landmark is the result of a commitment of members and other stakeholders, with financial support from the New York Yacht Club Foundation.

"This is another fine example of how we fulfill our mission of preservation," says Matt Brooks, Foundation president. "Members today and tomorrow will have a historically significant, beautiful and structurally sound place to gather and carry out Club activities and traditions." When finished, the restoration will rectify deterioration, rot, warping and operational issues. Where restoration is not an option, new windows will perfectly mimic the existing profiles and details of the original windows. The design incorporates long-lasting elements with crafted mahogany/oak frames and high-performance glazing. Benefits will include improved thermal and acoustical performance, as well as comfort.

A fine illustration of Beaux Arts neoclassicism, the 1898 building has been recognized for its architectural and historical significance and a "daring use of nautical symbols." The front of the 44th Street Clubhouse is renowned as one of the most memorable facades in Manhattan, fusing art and architecture to express the building's position and purpose.

In 1979, upon being designated a New York City landmark, the building was praised for the carefully executed asymmetrical composition of the façade as well as its prized monumental windows, whose reconstruction is a part of Phase Two of the project.

Alex Thomson Racing completes final service of HUGO BOSS yacht ahead of Vendee Globe 2020
British sailing team Alex Thomson Racing has completed the final service of its IMOCA 60 racing yacht, HUGO BOSS, ahead of the highly anticipated Vendee Globe race, which begins in less than two months' time.

The service - something which takes place before any major yacht race - involved the team checking and servicing the boat and each of its components, in order to ensure that it is safe to sail around the world on November 8th.

As well as servicing the boat, the team also undertook a 90 degree test, a process which assesses the yacht's righting moment upon its return to the water.

With less than two months to go until the start of the race, Skipper Alex Thomson and his team will spend the remaining weeks on the water training before departing for the race village in Les Sables D'Olonne, France.

"The final service went well and we feel in good shape" said Thomson. "Our new foils have arrived from Persico in Italy and they are now in. These version two foils are really a development of version one so they will actually look the same. But we've made some small refinements that should give us that little bit more in terms of performance and reliability.

"During the service we also made some other modifications to the boat and, since getting back out on the water, we can already see those changes have made a big difference. We're seeing significant performance increases of up to 10% so we're very happy so far! Now, time is everything for us, and we need to spend every available moment on the water before we leave for France next month".
