Yann Elies Leads On Final Long Straight to Stage 3 Finish, Goodchild In Contention
Approaching the Chaussee de Sein mark late this Tuesday afternoon, with some 125 nautical miles still to sail to the finish line off Saint Nazaire, three times La Solitaire du Figaro winner Yann Elies (Queguiner Materiaux-Leucemie Espoir) was holding a very slender lead over Britain's Sam Goodchild (Leyton). Racing through the strong currents off Ushant on the north west corner of Brittany with only very, very light winds Goodchild continues to hold his own as he matches Elies who he pipped to second place at the Stage 2 finish into Dunkirk. Were Elies to cross first he would draw level with his long term rival Le Cleac'h on seven stage wins

But while the British solo racer continued his carefully measured approach through a day which was marked by a significant bounce back by General Classification Armel Le Cleac'h (Banque Populaire).

Just when observers in his native France were voicing concerns that the twice La Solitaire champion had spent all of his overall lead of 37 minutes - and maybe more as he lay 24th and some ten miles behind the pacemakers - Le Cleac'h, The Jackal, again proved his willingness to take risks.

Cutting the corner at Ushant, passing down inside the small islands of the Ile de Quemenes and Ile Molene Stage 2 winner Le Cleac'h steadily clawed back five or six miles back on the leaders. Momentarily up to second, his actual placing is of no consequence. Of more significance the move brings him to within three miles of the two leaders, in theory just about restoring his overall lead.

For Goodchild the battle over these final hours to the line is mainly with Xavier Macaire (Groupe SNEF) who is second overall at 6 minutes and 29 seconds ahead of him when they left Dunkirk. The British skipper in turn had 6 minutes over Elies who is fourth overall and Goodchild has 7 minutes and 15 seconds over Tom Laperche (Bretagne CMB Espoir).

Alan Roberts (Seacat Services) is nicely positioned now in eighth, 1.8 miles behind the pacemaker but within reach of the podium, just half a mile behind his compatriot Goodchild. Phil Sharp (OceansLab) is 13th alongside Ireland's Tom Dolan (Smurfit Kappa) both 3.8 miles behind the leader.

12th Edition Of Selden Sailjuice Winter Series
Great Britain's most popular winter sailing series is back for its 12th season, with quite a few changes....

The 12th edition of the Selden SailJuice Winter Series kicks off in a couple of months' time, starting with the Fernhurst Books Draycote Dash on 21 & 22 November 2020. The intention is for the circuit to stay as similar as possible to previous years, although uncertainties created by Covid 19 mean some events are still TBC (To Be Confirmed). With Covid 19 causing a cease of open meeting activity at Yorkshire Dales Sailing Club for the rest of the year, for example, the Brass Monkey is temporarily replaced with a new event at Burghfield Sailing Club on 27 December 2020.

As ever, the Selden SailJuice Winter Series aims to appeal to as many classes as possible, with typically almost 100 different types of boat represented across the season, from fleets as diverse as the traditional Norfolk Punt and National 18 to emerging classes like the Hadron H2 singlehander.

Recognising the ever-changing Covid 19 environment and the need for flexibility, there will be changes to the entry process with a pre-entry registration stage. The latest details will be announced at the official launch of the Selden SailJuice Winter Series, 11am Tuesday 22nd Sept on Facebook

From 1st to 6th October The Genoa International Boat Show Will Welcome Boating Professionals and Enthusiasts for its 60th Anniversary Edition
Click on image for photos from previous shows.

Genoa International Boat Show The 60th Genoa International Boat Show will welcome industry professionals and boating enthusiasts alike, from 1st to 6th October, to experience the very best the industry has to offer.

The organizers are working to bring an event that will combine the highest standards of health and safety with an effective approach worthy of the Made in Italy brand and a world-class showcase. Requests for display space have been greater than expected, a sign that the event remains an essential tool for companies worldwide who recognize the value in taking part.

Exhibitors this year will see the return of the major yards in Italy and worldwide who were present last year, in addition to a number of new brands. As of today, these include a selection of industry-leading names: for motorboats Amer Yachts, Arcadia, Azimut-Benetti, Ferretti Group through FSD - Ferretti Security Division, Fipa Group, Pardo, Princess, Sanlorenzo, Sunseeker, VanDutch; for sailing boats, Beneteau, Dufour, Hanse, Jeanneau, Nautor's Swan, Mylius Yachts, Solaris and Vismara. This year a brand new area will be dedicated exclusively to Superboats. A full roster for outboards as well, along with an already substantial number of equipment and services-related companies.

The 2020 edition will see the implementation of a key plan of action aimed at creating a flexible layout that can adapt to a variety of scenarios. Supporting the organisers in this endeavour will be a Task Force made up of experts in engineering and legal practice. Plans are already in place to ensure the best organizational conditions, in line with the parameters defined by the World Health Organisation. This is only possible due to key innovations in relation to logistics, remote management and controlled access, all within an entirely new vision based on the large open-air spaces available.

The online ticketing is playing a central role, allowing visitors to purchase their tickets via the event's official website www.salonenautico.com. The online platform is the only channel for purchasing tickets, which will quickly be assigned to specific visiting days to allow for an effective level of crowd management and to prevent over-selling. Access to the Show area will be strictly monitored and automated.

Normandy Channel Race
Not without a struggle, the first Class40s in this 11th edition of the Normandy Channel Race rounded Lizard Point at around midday and are currently sheltering from the worst of the counter current close to the coast that wraps around Mounts Bay, awaiting the shift which should give them a slight lift around Land's End. In their wake, the competitors will have to go all out if they too are to stand a chance of getting through before the tide turns and the leaders hotfoot it up to Tuskar Rock.

"Our hands are beginning to warm up" declared the skipper of Credit Mutuel, Ian Lipinski, at today's radio link-up. It's a statement that perfectly sums up the difficulty the skippers are facing in their quest to get around the south-west tip of England. Evidently the skippers have spared no effort aboard the Class40s. The conditions on site, namely a light and shifty breeze in terms of direction, together with some misty phases, have required almost superhuman energy from the sailors to perform the requisite sequence of manoeuvres and remain vigilant when the visibility faded. An opportunistic streak would also have been a bonus as they tried to make the most of even a hint of something favourable and ensure they were on the right tack at the right time. In addition to the demanding conditions encountered by the sailors, the fleet has bunched right up since exiting the Solent, and the sailors have a really close-contact race on their hands, as Pierre-Louis Attwell explains. "For now the Normandy Channel Race is true to form with crews we thought we'd seen the back of coming right back into the frame", explained the skipper originally from France's Calvados region.

It's the same picture at the head of the fleet, where the leader is constantly changing in the match race between Credit Mutuel, Redman and Banque du Leman, who have each had a turn at the front of the pack over the past few hours. It's a stressful situation as Antoine Carpentier (Redman) explained at the radio link-up this lunchtime. "Psychologically it's hard, but it's why we're here and street brawls were one of my specialities for a number of years…" A lovely image to set the scene then, as the sailors slug it out, the bit between their teeth, ready for anything in their quest to be the first to be spat out the other side of Land's End.

Walking the 2021 Rolex Fastnet Race course
Moving to Cherbourg for the finish of the Royal Ocean Racing Club's premier event, the Rolex Fastnet Race next year will see navigators and crews facing a few significant new challenges.

Firstly the new course is 90 miles (or 15%) longer, making it 695 miles, based on the shortest route. Of this the first 500 miles (or 72%) of the course remain unchanged - setting off from the Royal Yacht Squadron line on Sunday 8 August 2021; heading southwest down the English south coast, negotiating Anvil Point, Portland Bill, Start Point and the Lizard en route, before the vital decision over which side to pass the Traffic Separation Scheme exclusion zone off Land's End. Then there are the open ocean crossings to the Fastnet Rock and back to Bishop Rock, southwest of the Scilly Isles.

From here the course changes marginally. From Bishop Rock it is possible to lay directly Cape de la Hague, the northwesternmost headland of the Cotentin Peninsula, before making the final slight starboard turn for the last 10 miles to the finish line within Cherbourg's harbour. The new course from Bishop Rock is 91°M, compared to 83° to the Lizard, however the added distance to Cherbourg may affect the make-up of the race overall.

More significant will be the final roll of the dice: how best to tackle one of Europe most powerful tidal gates - the Alderney Race, between Alderney and Cape de la Hague. "This is now the biggest tidal gate of the race," states Moore. "It is strongest off Cape de la Hague, through the Swinge (between Alderney and Burhou, northwest of Alderney) and off the eastern Alderney shore. The tidal effect also covers a much larger area than it does off Portland Bill. There will be winners and losers here and it will be hard to get right." -- James Boyd

Is this the last time the America's Cup event is held in NZ?
New Zealanders have had a love-hate relationship with the America's Cup and in particular with Team New Zealand since at least the time when the Cup was lost to Alinghi in 2003.

A feature of TNZ's funding since the time when it lost the Cup in 2003 has been the increasing contribution made by the New Zealand Government, especially since winning the Cup back again in 2017. It would seem probable that contribution in total exceeds by a considerable degree that by any single commercial sponsor and for the current event the total of all commercial sponsors.

It may be too late however to restore public and Government confidence in TNZ in its current corporate form and with its current management personnel. Apart from the weaknesses and failings identified by BV, questions also need to be asked how a company that appeals to the public for financial and other support can adopt a bespoke structure which has sitting over the top of its board a person (Matteo de Nora) described as "Team Principal" with undefined powers and accountabilities. De Nora's contribution, financial and otherwise, to TNZ goes back a long way and has been considerable. But there is no sound principle of corporate governance that would countenance the role of a person who is not a director of the board having superior access to and influence over the CEO/managing director of a company than the directors, particularly in the circumstances that Grant Dalton occupies over both TNZ and ACE.

Questions need to be asked also as to whether the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron is taking an effective supervisory role in the management of an event that comprises the defence of the Cup which was won in its name.

British Marine seeks answers from Southampton council and Secretary of State over cancellation of Boats2020

British Marine has released this statement, at 5pm on Friday 11 September:

Following the cancellation of BOATS2020 presented by Southampton International Boat Show Ltd on the eve of the event, British Marine is seeking further clarification from Southampton City Council with regard to the reasons for the late notice of decision.

British Marine had been assured by Southampton City Council that BOATS2020 was in complete compliance with current UK Government guidelines as well as the new rules set to come into effect on Monday 14 September. However, despite this, it is understood that Southampton City Council's last-minute decision to cancel the event was made after taking advice from their Director of Public Health and was due to the perceived risk of an increase in COVID-19 cases.

As a consequence, British Marine is appealing to the Secretary of State for Public Health and the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport about the decision and the Direction under Regulation 5(1) of the Health Protection Regulations 2020 that was served to the event, with a view to understand the options available to recompense British Marine exhibitors and stakeholders.
