A 'Dream' Win For Ferrarese in 49th Congressional Cup
Simone Ferrarese found speed in light wind like nobody else could Saturday to win the Long Beach Yacht Club's 49th Congressional Cup with a 54-second win over Ed Baird in a one-race championship showdown.

The 25-year-old Italian was the only one of the semifinalists who hadn't worn the blazer as he moved into the company of the world's elite match racing sailors with his first win in a Grade 1 event.

Earlier in the long afternoon fickle and feeble breeze delayed the start of racing for about two hours and then stopped it again for an hour in mid-afternoon before a 6-knot southerly showed up under a heavy cloud cover to allow the title match to go at 5:15 p.m.

Even then, the conditions were so fragile---and this was after winds in the high 20s had prevented any pre-event practice only five days earlier---principal race officer Randy Smith cut the title and petite finals from best-of-threes to single matches.

So, after Ferrarese had spotted Great Britain's Ian Williams--- the double defending champ and world No. 1---their first semifinal match before winning the next two and Baird had dispatched France's Mathieu Richard with wins in their first and third go-rounds, it all came down to a single race.

That's when Smith also ordered the windward-leeward, twice-around course shortened from a 0.35 nautical mile to 0.25---a mere quarter-mile that seemed to suffice.

As it was, Ferrarese found breeze that nobody else could, first winning the favored left side from Baird, who went right at the start, and extending his leads from 29 seconds at the first windward mark to 35 at the leeward, 48 at the second windward and finally 54 at the finish. Baird said, "He just went the better way. We gave him what he wanted." -- Rich Roberts

Alinghi Win Extreme Saiing Series Act 2, Singapore
Morgan Larson and his Swiss team Alinghi sailed a faultless regatta at Act 2 of the Extreme Sailing Series in Singapore on one of the most memorable stadium race courses the Extreme 40 fleet have ever sailed on to claim overall victory. Only one race was sailed on the final day in typical light wind Singaporean conditions but it was one of the most-tense final races ever in the seven-year history of the Series.

Shortly after the fleet left the dock and due to the lack of breeze, Race Committee made the call to run non-points scoring exhibition races, and as the racing was all but abandoned the wind filled in, and the committee were able to complete one more race which changed the face of the Act results. According to the SAP analytics, at different stages during the final race, four teams including Alinghi (SUI), Red Bull Sailing Team (AUT), SAP Extreme Sailing (DEN) and Realteam (SUI) were all in podium positions with the constant shuffling of the leader board making it anyone's game. Morgan Larson, who has led the pack since race six, was unflappable and his Swiss team claim a deserved win, their first win since Almeria in 2011.

The biggest surprise of the day perhaps came from The Wave, Muscat. Known for their ability to fight back on the final day, today's single race just wasn't enough for skipper Leigh McMillan and a poor start ultimately cost them the podium.

Next, the global road show moves on to Qingdao, China's Olympic sailing city, a regular on the Extreme Sailing Series as the fleet return for the third consecutive year, 2nd-5th May 2013.

The Porsche Design Origins of Adidas Sailing Footwear
addidas sailing It was back in 2007 that adidas first investigated the idea of developing shoes specifically for sailing athletes. This was for the Porsche Design range, and the man tasked with coming up with the best possible sailing shoes was footwear designer Jacques Chassaing. "We had Jochen Schumann who just started working with the German America's Cup team and on the TP52 keelboat.

"The aim for the project was to create shoes that were really specific to the different jobs you have on the boat. We did a lot of research into the boat, the environment, the roles of the crew and worked out the ideal shoe for each person on the boat.

"We could have designed a lot of shoes because there are so many different functions on the boat but in the end we narrowed it down to three specific types to cover most functions, and we called these shoes the 'bowman', the 'grinder' and the 'tactician'."

Les Voiles De Saint Barth
The final day of racing at Les Voiles de St. Barth served up lively conditions for the fleet, with 20+ knots of wind whipping up four- to six-foot seas. The race committee sent the Maxi/Racing, Maxi, and Spinnaker 1 and 2 classes on a 17 nautical mile course along the western side of the island, somewhat protected by the lee of the land but nevertheless providing shifty conditions. Spinnaker 3, Melges 24, Classic, Non-Spinnaker, and Multihull classes sailed a 26 nautical mile course around the islands off the north and east side of St. Barths, fully exposed to the fresh beeze and ocean swell.

The conditions took their toll on a few boats, starting with Team Island Water World (SXM), Fritz Bus's Melges 24. The Dutch boat was leading its class on the first downwind leg but dismasted when the backstay let go, ending the St. Maarten team's chances for winning. Several boats blew out spinnakers and headsails, and the 51-foot Augie Neilsen-designed ketch Saphaedra (USA), raced double-handed by skipper Jamie Enos and first mate Amanda Sparks, retired with the skipper explaining, "Too much wind for an old boat!"

In Maxi/Racing, Jim Swartz's TP52 Vesper extended its string of bullets to win the class.

In the Maxi class, the Swan 80 Selene continued its winning ways, sweeping ahead of Whisper and Idea of London (and the Swan 100 Varsovie, which retired from the regatta after damaging its headstay on the first day of racing).

In the Multihull class, Erick Clement's 40-foot Dauphine Telecom tried to spoil the 63-foot Nigel Irens-designed Paradox's (USA) party, and in fact came within one point of the overall leader but Paradox went home with the silver.

In the Classics, Tim Rutter's 74-foot Frers-designed sloop Heroina (USA) romped around the course all week. The cold-molded boat, built in the mid-1990s by German Frers as his personal yacht, seems to have racing in its lineage with a mast that was given to Frers from America's Cup challenger Il Moro de Venezia (it was the team's spare and effectively determined the boat's size) and a winged keel from Stars and Stripes 1987. The keel was perfect for the shallow draft of Heroina's home waters on the River Plate in Argentina.

Testing The Fleet Windstopper Jacket
Sail Racing In early April, Sail Racing took two of their test team members, Jes Gram-Hansen and Rasmus Kostner, the co-skippers of the SAP Extreme Sailing Team, to a test center for racing cars. The wind tunnel at the center is normally used by premium sports car brands to determine their aerodynamic values prior to the racing season.

Facing straight into a wind that reached speeds up to 65 knots, Jes and Rasmus stood in different positions and replicated movements that they would make during a race at sea. "It was a bit of a strange feeling, standing there looking into the dark hole, hearing the spooky sound of the wind machine starting up. I actually shuddered for a few seconds. The constant power of the wind really put us and the WINDSTOPPER garments into a tough testing situation." Jes commented. "The products worked great," Rasmus added. "It was amazing how the fabric protected me from the high wind speed and prevented my body from becoming chilled!"

Sail Racing Fleet series jackets, shorts, pants and vest are now available in the Sail Racing webshop.

Classic Boat Awards 2013
Comedian, writer and classic boat owner-sailor Griff Rhys Jones gave out the prizes for [the] inaugural Classic Boats awards ceremony in London.

And Griff made light of some of the absurdities of wooden boat ownership as he quipped: "I bought a boat for £70,000, spent £500,000 on her over the years and I find she is now worth... £70,000."

The awards took place at the Bremont watch and clock showrooms, in South Audley St, Mayfair. Introducing them our main sponsor Geoff Mackrill - the Mac of Teamac paints - said he was awe-inspired by the dedication and work of owners and restorers of wooden boats. "It's down to people's passion, for restoring and making things that are totally unique, and beautiful, and in this day and age - when everything seems to be stamped or popped out of a mould for the least cost, that's brilliant," he said.

The atmosphere was quite international as we had people from Italy, France, Holland and Ireland who had come at short notice to collect their award. -- Dan Houston

Normandy Channel Race
The Normandy Channel Race 2013 set off Sunday, bang on 1700 hours local time offshore of Hermanville-sur-Mer in northern France. 20 Class 40s and their double-handed crews have kicked off their 1,000-mile, week-long race. After an initial 7-mile inshore course between Luc-sur-Mer and Ouistreham, the competitors are currently making headway towards the Saint Marcouf islands, an archipelago in the Bay de Seine. It's "Mare" skippered by German sailor Jorg Riechers and Picardy sailor Pierre Brasseur, who are leading the way this evening, with "Norma Concept - Le Pal" hot on their heels helmed by Bruno Jourdren and Thomas Ruyant.

The fleet got away to a clean start, with "Geodis" first to cross the start line, followed by "Norma Concept - Le Pal", "Red" and "Made In Normandie". They were close-hauled as they set a course for the first race mark. Taking the left side of the course offshore of Hermanville-sur-Mer, "Mare" skippered by Jorg Riechers and Pierre Brasseur, screamed away from their pursuers and were first to round the mark.

The fleet is making headway in a regular SSW'ly breeze towards the Saint Marcouf islands. For now, the boats have the tide with them, but the latter is set to turn at 1900 hours local time. As such some major moves may be set up according to their offshore or inshore options. Strategically the fleet will then have to position itself in relation to the first front, which is due to scoop up the sailors early tonight for the cross-channel hop. -- Translated by Kate Jennings

Wolfhound Didn't Sink!
You can't put a good boat down. Here she is. The lost one. The Irish Swan 48 Wolfhound, doing better on her own than she did with a crew writes W M Nixon.

Nine weeks after she was abandoned in a storm 70 miles north of Bermuda, her crew taken off safely by the Greek ship Tetien Trader, Wolfhound floats on all alone, now 800 miles southeast of Bermuda.

Going her own way, she's getting near the wide Sargasso Sea, where she might drift for eternity unless somebody brings her in. Highly likely, now that [a] remarkable pic has gone viral. All things considered, she's looking very well. Her upper boot-top is still showing, so there can't be that much water down below. But we can't tell if her hull is still intact, as she was starboard-side-on for the rescue. So there could well be impact damage away from the camera's eye.

And how can she be found again, now that the ship that took the pic has moved on? Let's hope that somebody thought to chuck a mobile phone into her cockpit. It could give a signal, however weak, for a long time - long enough to find her again and put a crew aboard to sail her up to Bermuda, or across to the Azores. WM Nixon in Afloat magazine:

Gold Cup Hamilton, Bermuda: The Royal Bermuda Yacht Club and Argo Group has issued invitations for the 2013 Argo Group Gold Cup. Match racing for the King Edward XVII Gold Cup Trophy is scheduled to start October 8th on Hamilton Harbour in Bermuda. The finals are scheduled for Sunday October 13th.

Taylor Canfield, (USVI) USone Sailing Team, confirmed that he will be back to defend his 2012 title in the Gold Cup. Speaking about his fourth Gold Cup competition, he said, "I am most definitely looking forward to coming back to Bermuda to defend our Argo Group Gold Cup title. USone Sailing Team is ecstatic to be a 2013 Alpari World Match Race Tour Card Holder."

"While the boats - classic, full-keeled IODs - are quite unique compared to boats in any other venue," Canfield noted, "the variety of sailing conditions and beautiful, but variable weather make this event one of the best in the world. Bermuda has been an incredible place to sail. I started in the RenRe Junior Gold Cup and now I'm going back to Bermuda as the defending champion... It's a dream."

Automatic invitations went to the eight Alpari World Match Racing Tour Card Holders and eight more invitations went to top sailors in the ISAF Match Race 'Open' Rankings, to some past participants in the Gold Cup and to skippers with top match racing records over years on the match racing scene. -- Talbot Wilson
