Clear Winner Despite Fog at Optimist European Sailing Championships
Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin, Ireland: The final race of the Optimist European Sailing Championship had to be cancelled Saturday for safety reasons as fog thickened on Dublin Bay.
In the girls' event Ebru Bolat, sailing for the Royal Romanian Yacht Club, had virtually secured the title yesterday with a superbly sailed second place in the penultimate race and could only have been defeated if her main rival Spain's Iset Segura (Arenys de Mar) had come in the top two. Third was Swiss lake sailor Martina Muller from Zurich.
Boys' winner Enzo Balanger is from the Cataraibes club on the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe.
Second was Kasper Nordenram, another lake sailor from Rörviks Sailing Club in central Sweden. Daniel Toh of Singapore took Open Bronze with German Lennart Kuss from the famous Baltic sailing venue of Warnemunde taking the European Bronze medal.
Enzo is the first French winner of this event since 1985 when Maxime Paul, now trimmer on Tour de France a la Voile team Groupama.

Falmouth, UK - The opening day of the Six Metre European Championship 2014 hosted by the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club, Falmouth, opened with blazing sunshine, but not a breath of wind. The fleet went afloat on time for the planned 10.30 start, but it wasn't until almost 4 o'clock that the wind finally established itself sufficiently to get the first of two short but very enjoyable races underway.
The Modern Division enjoyed two fantastically close races. Defending European Champion GBR107 Valhalla, owned by Paul Smith, and Don Martin's CAN111 Blade Runner, spent the day dueling for the lead, leaving the pack trailing in their wake. In race one Blade Runner was victorious, while Valhalla turned the tables in race two.
The Modern's second race was to have the closest race finish of the day with Robin Richardson's GBR88 St Kitts, Robert Leigh-Wood's GBR90 Lyonesse and Notorious crossing the line simultaneously. The Race Committee was able to identify Lyonesse as the leading boat by a whisker and she was awarded fifth place, but they couldn't separate St Kitts and Notorious who were scored as joint sixth place.
The day's big controversy came in the Classic Division's race one when Matt Brooks' US55 Lucie, helmed by James A Hilton Sr, made a somewhat over enthusiastic approach at the committee boat end of the start line. Louis Heckly's FRA111 Dix Aout, helmed by Bernard Divorne, had been lined up for the perfectly, but was forced to bear away hard to avoid hitting Lucie. Off the line Lucie immediately tacked off onto port and led the race from start to finish. Back ashore Dix Aout put in a protest and the committee found in her favour, disqualifying Lucie from the race.
Tomorrow's forecast is for light and variable north to northeasterly winds
Charles Stanley Cowes Classics Week's Red Hot Opener

As the Cowes so-called heatwave continues, the day offered just enough breeze, between 8 and 12 knots, to provide some stable conditions, before softening towards the end of the race day.

29erxx Class Extends Grants To Female Teams
Seven top female 29er skiff teams representing 5 nations received grants to assist their participation in the upcoming 29er World Championship. The 29erXX Class was able to grant $500 and $1,000 grants, totaling $6,500.
"We would like to use the 29erXX Class funds to continue the goal that we set out to achieve. Our goal is to bring women's skiff sailing to the forefront through increased participation and helping young women to develop their skills to world-class levels" said Jen Morgan-Glass, 29erXX Class President. "We feel we can empower young women in their sailing careers by providing grants to help them attend major championships. The 29er class is the global development class for skiff sailors, and has a tradition of being the proving ground for future Olympians. Thus the 29er fleet was a logical choice as we looked to support future champions."
The 29erXX solicited grant requests through the 29er Class and received many responses. The class hopes to continue to distribute grant assistance for a few more years.
This year's grants will enable these teams to attend the 2014 29er Worlds, to be held in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, July 26-August 2. Currently there are 102 entrants represented by 14 nations and 18 all-female teams.
Farr 40 Us West Coast Championship
Santa Barbara, California, USA: Skipper Alberto Rossi and his team aboard Enfant Terrible sure know how to close out a tight regatta. Holding a narrow one-point lead going into the final day of the Farr 40 West Coast Championship, the Italians went out and won the opening race then survived a match race duel with chief challenger Flash Gordon 6 during the second race to secure the overall victory.
Enfant Terrible wound up winning four of 11 races over four spectacular days of racing to capture the West Coast Championship with a low score of 44 points, one better than skipper Helmut Jahn and his crew on Flash Gordon 6. Voodoo Chile, a Corinthian entry owned by Lloyd Clark of Tasmania, put forth an impressive performance for a team with just two professionals to take third with 48 points.
