Crews Come Out Swinging At 70th Bermuda Gold Cup
Hamilton, Bermuda: As Phil Robertson's China One Ningbo and Torvar Mirsky's Mirsky Racing Team streaked out to 4-0 leads in their respective groups at the 70th Bermuda Gold Cup and 2020 Open Match Racing World Championship, it's hard to believe all of the skippers, including those two, who talked of being rusty coming into this regatta.
There's no doubting that many in the fleet haven't sailed much over the past eight months due to the coronavirus pandemic. There's also no disputing the fact that many haven't match raced monohulls in 12 to 18 months; multihulls have been ubiquitous on the World Match Racing Tour for a few years now. It's just hard to believe them when they say they're rusty.
The 16 crews treated spectators to classic match racing action today with dial-downs, luffing matches, come-from-behind victories and plenty of penalty requests to keep the on-water umpires jumping. Don't forget, they had a long layoff as well.
The King Edward VII Trophy, awarded to the winner of the Bermuda Gold Cup, is the oldest trophy in the world for competition involving one-design yachts. First presented in 1907 by King Edward VII at the Tri-Centenary Regatta at Jamestown, Va., honoring the 300th anniversary of the first permanent colony in America, the trophy is the only King's Cup ever to be offered for competition in the United States which could be won outright.
The Bermuda Gold Cup, an event of the World Match Racing Tour, is presented by Argo Group in benefit of the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS), an independent US non-profit scientific research and educational organization based in Bermuda. For over 100 years BIOS-based researchers and visiting scientists have worked to explore the ocean and address important local and global environmental issues, including climate change, coral reef resilience, and environmental monitoring. As a Bermuda registered charity, BIOS is committed to providing local students with educational programs that build a foundation for an appreciation of Bermuda's marine environment, as well as future careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects.
The Bermuda Gold Cup is proudly presented by the Bermuda Tourism Authority. -- Sean McNeill

18ft Skiffs Club Championship, Race 1
Click on image for photo gallery.
Sydney Harbour: The Australian champion tech2 team of Jack Macartney, Charlie Wyatt and Lewis Brake mastered the 25-knot Southerly wind, which battered the 18ft Skiff fleet, to score a brilliant victory in Race 1 of the Australian 18 Footers League Club Championship on Sydney Harbour today.
After trailing the early leader Winning Group (Will Phillips, Seve Jarvin, Sam Phillips) over the first two legs of the course, tech2 took control of the race before crossing the finish line in what may be record time for the long Southerly course.
Winning Group capsized while tacking on the windward leg into Rose Bay but the talented young crew recovered well to finish the race in second place, 4m20s behind the winner.
The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines (Aron Everett, Courtney Mahar, Charlie Gundy) challenged Winning Group, for second place, over the final lap of the course, but had to be satisfied with third placing 19s behind Winning Group.
Smeg, skippered by former Giltinan world champion Michael Coxon, tacked soon after the start and was pressing strongly for the lead as the fleet approached the first windward mark off Clark Island before the team suffered the first of three capsizes during the race.
Winning Group led Bird & Bear (Tom Clout), Noakesailing (Sean Langman) and Andoo (Marcus Ashley-Jones) as the fleet 'took-off' on a long, wild spinnaker run from Clark Island to Obelisk Bay.
tech2 had gybed earlier in the run and gained on the leader as the fleet raced at top speed ahead of the 25-knot Southerly wind.
After Winning Group capsized in Rose Bay on the first lap of the course, Shaw & Partners Financial Services (Dave O'Connor) grabbed second place just ahead of Bird & Bear, followed by The Oak Double Bay-4Pines, Finport Finance (Keagan York), the recovering Winning Group and appliancesonline.com.au (Simon Nearn).
Winning Group's recovery had been impressive as the team narrowly took second place away from The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines at the Shark Island mark in Rose Bay.
Bird & Bear's jib carried away and the skiff was forced to retire.
Race 4 of the Spring Championship series will be conducted next Sunday, November 1. -- Frank Quealey Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.
Harken Battcars: Nothing You Can Add, Adds So Much Safety
For years, Harken Battcars have been so low in friction, sailors reef easily even while blast reaching--even in a blow. Shortening the sail so safely can be the difference between an uneventful reef and having to get extra crewmembers out of the cockpit. Battcars add a factor of safety we want for more sailors.
These days, there are more Harken Battcar options than ever. The split track switch system option safely shrinks mainsail stack height by cueing each car to take an alternate path as the halyard is lowered. This system has an option for a trysail that allows crews to hoist and douse from below the boom around that stack.
And the now-available Harken slug track makes a mast-up retrofit a realistic DIY project. Recently, we began retrofitting a 40-footer in the morning and went sailing that evening! Watch that project.
And Battcar systems cost a fraction of in-boom or in-mast furling systems for which you need a whole new spar.
If you're doing more short-handed sailing…or you'd like to. Or if you're dreading a decision to downsize, Harken Battcars can be the solution. So much safety, so simply added.
Offshore Doubles Hits 1000 Members From 56 Countries In 2 Weeks
OffshoreDoubles.org announced today that it has 1,035 members from 56 countries within its first 2 weeks of existence. Thirteen percent of these members are women and all six continents are well represented.
Larry Rosenfeld, president of Offshore Doubles said, "We are thrilled to see the momentum behind the discipline of Offshore Doubles both mixed and open and are pleased to welcome Andrew Pindar and Rich Du Moulin to our Board. Both bring tremendous expertise to our organization."
Andrew Pindar OBE DL, has been sponsor of many high-profile winning teams in both inshore and offshore sailing, many women's teams and singlehanded sailors. His teams have been around the world seven times. In double handed sailing, among the silver his teams have won are the Transat Jacques Vabre, Round Britain and Ireland and last month a new record in the Round Ireland. His GAC Pindar logistics partnership with World Sailing has benefited sailors from all nations and supported the return of sailing to the Paraolympic Games. In 2019, Andrew initiated and commissioned through World Sailing Trust, a report on girls and Women in Sailing resulting in a blueprint for gender equity throughout the sport.
Rich Du Moulin has an impressive sailing resume, including 5 America's Cup campaigns and 25 Bermuda Races (7 double handed). He has been Commodore of the Storm Trysail Club and US Rear Commodore of RORC. Rich has been double handed sailing offshore actively since 2002 and set the World's Record in 2003 with Rich Wilson from Hong Kong to New York on the trimaran "Great American II." He has been personally passionate about Safety at Sea and instrumental in ensuring that the majority of sailors who race offshore have been through Safety at Sea courses.
Offshore Doubles is for everyone interested in double-handing offshore from couples and friends doing weekend races to Olympic athletes and serious programs globally. We all have much to learn and teach and it's our mission to bring this community together. There are more than 5,000 boats racing double-handed under rating rules and thousands in many strong one design fleets around the world, so we know the interest is there.
We are calling all sailors to please come join us NOW at https://offshoredoubles.org! The World Sailing meetings this week will determine if the Offshore Mixed Doubles Event will continue to be on the slate for Paris 2024 and we need to show the Olympic committee that Doubles has broad global support.
Windfoilers wow at first ever iQFOiL world championships
Britain's elite windsurfers proved their strength in depth with an impressive show at the first ever world championships for the iQFOiL class, Olympic sailing's newest discipline.
Less than a year since the iQFOiL was announced as the equipment of choice for windfoiling's debut at the Paris 2024 Olympics, a 19-strong British contingent headed to Italy's Lake Garda to see how they shaped up against the rest of the world.
The six-day iQFOiL International Games was only the second major regatta for the new class following on from the European Championships held in Switzerland in August.
Matt Barton and Sam Sills led the British effort in the men's competition, finishing the event fifth and sixth respectively, while Islay Watsonand Imogen Sills were seventh and ninth in the women's fleet.
Rising stars Watson and Finn Hawkins made history becoming the class's first under 21 and under 19 world champions.
Watson, 20, a youth world champion in 2018 in the RS:X, was also the top British female. Her gold in the under 21 category adds to the senior silver medal she won at the class European Championships.
Hawkins, 17, was 14th overall, and only narrowly missed out on taking the under 21 title on top of his under 19 victory.
Like Watson, Hawkins, who won a bronze medal for Team GB at the 2018 Youth Olympics, was also a medal winner at the European Championships, taking the top spot in the youth division.
