Maserati Multi70 (ITA), skippered by Giovanni Soldini, crossed the finish line of the 2020 Rolex Middle Sea Race at the Royal Malta Yacht Club to take Multihull Line Honours at 20:41:31 CEST on Monday 19th October in an elapsed time of 2 days, 08 hours 31 minutes 31 seconds.
Mana (ITA), owned by Riccardo Pavoncelli, finished fifteen minutes behind after a closely fought battle around the course.
During the race there will be live daily updates on Facebook at 0900 each day (and other times to be advised).
Women Skippers To Race Open Match Racing Worlds
Hamilton, Bermuda: Another glass ceiling for women in sailing will be shattered next week at the 70th Bermuda Gold Cup and 2020 Open Match Racing World Championship when two accomplished female skippers - Frenchwoman Pauline Courtois and Anna Ostling of Sweden - will race in the Open Worlds for the first time ever.
Women's crews have been regular entrants at the Bermuda Gold Cup since the regatta was reformatted to a ladder-style tournament in the mid-1980s. Successful racers such as Betsy Allison, Sally Barkow and JJ Fetter of the U.S., Bermudian Paula Lewin and Klaartje Zuiderbaan of the Netherlands are among those who have tried to tackle the International One-Design (IOD) sloop on Hamilton Harbour.
In the past two years Lucy Macgregor's Team Mac from Great Britain posted back-to-back fourth-place finishes, the best showings ever by an all-women's crew at the famed regatta.
The Open Worlds, however, have long been the domain of men. Never has a woman skipper raced in the Open Worlds, let alone two. Next week, that record changes.
The 70th Bermuda Gold Cup and 2020 Open Match Racing World Championship are scheduled Oct. 26-30 with a field of 16 teams set to contest the dual regatta. Courtois, 31, is back for a second go with a trove of knowledge after last year's run to the Repechage Round. Ostling, 36, a two-time winner of the Women's World Match Racing Championship (2014, '16), is making her first appearance at the World Match Racing Tour event in Bermuda.

Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team launches its second AC 75 Luna Rossa in Auckland
The second AC 75 Luna Rossa boat was launched this morning, at 10.30 local time, in the presence of the families of the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team and a small group of friends and local suppliers close to the team in its New Zealand venture.
The ceremony was simple and traditional, enhanced by the blessing of Luna Rossa by Father "Pa" Peter Tipene, Cathedral Dean of Auckland Cathedral, and followed by the christening of the boat by Tatiana Sirena, wife of Team Director and Skipper Max Sirena, as she broke on the bow a bottle of Ferrari Maximum Blanc de Blancs from Cantine Ferrari, the team's "sparkling partner. The local Maori welcome ritual accompanied Luna Rossa in the final phase of the launch as she was lowered into the sea.
The hull, built at the Persico Marine shipyard in Nembro (Bergamo), reached Auckland on October 6th on an Antonov cargo plane, the largest transport aircraft in the world. In the few days that separated the arrival of the boat from the launch, the foils, the on-board systems and instrumentation were installed and set up in record time to be ready to sail right after the first load tests, which started one hour after the launch.
"Boat 2" is the natural evolution of the previous project, developed on the basis of the data collected during the intense navigation period in the Gulf of Cagliari, and elaborated by the by the design team, with the close collaboration of the sailing team whose feedback was essential to the process. As on "Boat 1", the new hull will also feature technology details designed in partnership with Pirelli. Among these, thanks to this company's ability to create innovative materials for tire technology, is a component, used for all parts that touch the water, that adds performance at the highest speed range.
For the first time, the AC75 class boats competing in the 36th America's Cup presented by PRADA will race against each other in the waters of Auckland in the PRADA America's Cup World Series and the PRADA Christmas Race, scheduled to take place from December 17 to 20.
From January 15th 2021 the competition will heat up with the PRADA Cup event (15 January - 22 February 2021), the Challengers Selection Series that will determine the team challenging the Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand, in the Final Match of the 36th America's Cup presented by PRADA (6-21 March 2021).

Balboa Yacht Club announces change of date and rule modification for 2021 Governor's Cup
Balboa Yacht Club today announced new 2021 dates for the 54th Annual Governor's Cup International Youth Match Racing Championship sponsored by Disc Sports and Spine Center. The Cup will be held from July 26-31, 2021, instead of the former planned dates earlier in July. The Club will also host the 2021 Youth Match Racing World Championship and is awaiting approval from World Sailing to confirm August 9-14 dates for that event. The new dates for both events will maintain a one-week break between those major regattas for the all-volunteer event staff.
The Governor's Cup is the oldest youth match racing championship in the world and has produced some of the sport's leading America's Cup, Congressional Cup, Olympic and, perhaps surprisingly, Round the World Race winners. 2021 will be the second time Balboa Yacht Club has been honored by World Sailing in allowing it to host the Youth Match Racing World Championship, having first hosted the event in 2017. Teams in both events will be provided with twelve "purpose-built" "Governor's Cup 22" sloops which were first used in the 2016 50th Anniversary "GovCup". Designed by famed yacht designer and BYC member Alan Andrews, the boats are light, fast in all conditions, and feature a fractional rig, "flat top" mainsails and masthead spinnakers.
The Governor's Cup Deed of Gift (originally provided by then-Governor and later U.S. President Ronald Reagan) provides that no competitor may have reached his or her 23rd birthday. The date of age determination is not in the Deed of Gift but traditionally, the cutoff date is the last day of each year's Cup. Two of this year's invitees, Nick Egnot-Johnson (NZL), who is the defending champion from 2019, and Ted Blowers (GBR), who would be a first time GovCup competitor, would have missed next year's deadline by a matter of weeks.
The Board of the Balboa Yacht Club approved an amendment to the Deed of Gift which will only be in effect next year. It will allow RFI's will be accepted from 2020 invitees otherwise qualified that do not meet that cutoff date. "In all other respects, the rules will stay the same as will the selection process, including the automatic invitations," continued Rose. All crew members next year must still meet the normal age limit deadline even in the case of their wishing to sail with a skipper that benefits from the rule change.
The Notice of Race, the event brochure and information on requesting an invitation for the 2021 Governor's Cup will be posted on the Cup's website govcupracing.com in January, 2021.

The 7th edition of the Venice Hospitality Challenge saw Portopiccolo Prosecco Doc - Hilton Molino Stucky skipper Claudio Demartis and helmed by Stefano Cherin thanks to a clear victory in Overall and in Class 1 on the top step of the podium. Second finish less than five minutes Pendragon Lightbay Sailing Team - Bauer Palazzo with skipper Carlo Alberini and third, just over two minutes, Anywave - Belmond Hotel Cipriani protagonist of a great recovery with Alberto Leghissa at the helm and Mauro Pelaschier tactical.
The regatta, which set a new boat record with fifteen Maxi Yachts competing, took place on a short course due to the weak wind of about 5-6 knots. After a first part of the regatta with very light wind, Portopiccolo Prosecco Doc - Hilton Molino Stucky was able to take advantage of a gust to pick up speed, conquering the first position that it never left until the finish line of Marina Santelena.

IMA Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge 2020-21 announced
The prime role of the International Maxi Association, as endorsed by World Sailing, is to encourage and support all forms of maxi racing internationally. In line with this remit, five years ago it introduced the IMA Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge (MMOC), to entice more maxis out on to the race course and friendly rivalry between owners. Past winners of have included Miguel Galuccio/Vera (2018-19), Carlo A. Puri Negri/Atalanta II (2017-18) and George David/Rambler 88 (2015-16).
The IMA Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge 2020-21 got underway this weekend in Valletta with the start of the Rolex Middle Sea Race, organised by the Royal Malta Yacht Club. While a maxi yacht hasn't won this event outright since Andres Soriano's Mills 68 Alegre in 2009, during the 2000s maxis enjoyed much more success with outright winners including Hasso Plattner's Morning Glory, Carlo Puri Negri's Atalanta II, Charles Dunstone's Nokia and Robert McNeil's Zephyrus IV. But the biggest win was certainly by George David's Rambler when in 2007 she scored the 'triple' – line honours, the overall win under IRC and setting a new time of 47 hours 55 minutes and 3 seconds, a record which stands to this day.
Into 2021, and, for a third time, the IMA Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge will include, as its second event, another long-standing Mediterranean classic: Regata dei Tre Golfi. Renowned for its midnight start following dinner and fireworks at the Circolo del Remo e della Vela Italia clubhouse in Naples, the course takes the boats north around the island of Ponza, then south around Li Galli before finishing in Capri. This will be the 66th running of this event and as usual it forms part of Rolex Capri Sailing Week, however in 2021 it comes with a schedule change: starting on 15 May it will follow the Maxi Yacht Capri Trophy (11-14 May) and precede the ORC European Championship.
For a fourth time the 151 Miglia-Trofeo Cetilar will be included. This is the youngest offshore race in the IMA calendar, and in 2019 celebrated its 10th anniversary, a special race that saw George David's Rambler 88 claim line honours and setting a race record, while Argentinean Miguel Galuccio's RP84 Vera won on corrected time.
The more famous event to round the rock off northern Corsica is of course the one bearing its name – Rolex Giraglia. First run in 1953, 2021 will be its 67th edition (after the 2020 race was cancelled due to the pandemic) and remains a joint operation between the Yacht Club Italiano and Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez. For 2021 its course will revert back to the traditional finish in the YCI's home port of Genoa rather than Monaco. In recent years around 30 maxis have typically taken part in this event, making it one of the world's biggest offshore events for maxis.
The IMA Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge 2020-21 concludes once again with the Palermo-Montecarlo race.
IMA members must compete in a minimum of three races from the series, with their best three results counting if they do more. -- James Boyd

Vale Geoff Ewenson
Professional sailor Geoff Ewenson unexpectedly passed away last week after suffering a heart attack at age 50.
Ewenson is survived by his parents, siblings and his wife and sailing partner, Mary, publisher of SpinSheet, a highly regarded Chesapeake Bay sailing magazine.
The couple were consistent podium finishers in races up and down the US Eastern seaboard in their Viper 640, easily recognisable for the huge SpinSheet logo adorning the spinnaker.
As a youth, Ewenson raced with the Ida Lewis Yacht Club junior sailing programa and attended Tabor Academy, becoming co-captain of the sailing team, receiving the Braitmayer Award in recognition of outstanding contributions.
Ewenson graduated from the University of Rhode Island, where he twice earned All-American honours as a coed dinghy competitor and also led the intercollegiate sailing program's successful big-boat program.
Ewenson met the former Mary Iliff while competing in a frostbite regatta at the Severn Sailing Association in 1996 and married three years later.
The couple settled in Anapolis, where Mary was a third-generation sailor and where she founded SpinSheet, as well as two other publications Prop Talk and Fish Talk.
Ewenson did whatever he could to help his wife and the rest of the SpinSheet staff. In fact, he was picking up copies of the most recent edition for distribution when he was stricken on Wednesday morning.
"Although he was not on the payroll at SpinSheet, Geoff was an integral part of our team. We liked to call him our 'fleet manager'. More importantly, he was a consultant on racing topics, an excellent writer and boat reviewer and a calming influence on Mary," SpinSheet editor Molly Winans told the Baltimore Sun. "We at SpinSheet can't yet imagine the world without Geoff in it."

I think it’s one of the most useless questions an adult can ask a child—What do you want to be when you grow up? As if growing up is finite. As if at some point you become something and that’s the end. -- Michelle Obama
