The Ocean Race Europe
The inaugural edition of The Ocean Race Europe, scheduled to start late in the spring of 2021, will bring international top-flight, competitive ocean racing to up to five European cities. The Ocean Race Europe will engage with European citizens to enhance the ambitious green transition and showcase the power of Digital Transformation.
The Ocean Race Europe will see crew members from all over the world racing in foiling IMOCA 60s and one-design VO65s racing from the North Atlantic coast of Europe into the Mediterranean Sea, on a race course of up to five legs, each to be scored equally. There will be winners and prizes in each class.
"The Ocean Race Europe, provisionally scheduled to run over the month of June, fits well in the racing calendar in 2021 and provides our teams with competitive, meaningful racing next year, adding continuity to their racing programmes," said Johan Salen, the Managing Director of The Ocean Race. "As a new event, it has been important that we have support from teams and sailors for this project to get off the ground, and the feedback to date has been extremely positive."
"The Ocean Race Europe is a good new event for the IMOCA fleet as it will allow us to start the summer with a race around Europe, fully crewed, in both ocean and Mediterranean conditions," said Jeremie Beyou, skipper of the IMOCA 60 Charal. "The racing, with relatively short legs, should be close and very competitive, while on shore it will allow us to engage with more sailing fans around Europe, so for us it is an interesting project."
Melges 20 World Championship, Brontolo is on top of the World
Cala Galera, Italy: The World Title of the Melges 20 Class remains in Italy: following the success of Alessandro Rombelli in Miami in 2019, this year the winner is Filippo Pacinotti's Brontolo Racing.
The crew of Pacinotti, protagonist of a series of extremely consistent regattas for the entire duration of the event (1-1-2-1-2-4-1-1-DNC the partials of the series) won the World title with a race to spare, leaving 21 points behind Russian Bogatyrs by Igor Rytov and Fremito d'Arja by Dario Levi. The latter secured the third step of the podium only at the end of the very last race of the series .
Brontolo, already European Champion in 2019 in Malcesine, set his pace since the very first race, proving to be able to perfectly read the varied weather conditions that characterized the week on the Argentario promontory, scoring a flawless series.
The marina of Cala Galera will host the Melges 20 fleet also for the last event of the year 2020 scheduled from 20 to 22 November which will decide the winner of the Melges World League 2020 circuit.
Starting this December, the videos will be released weekly as part of a live show on the British Keelboat Sailing Facebook page with each short video used within then available on YouTube as a reference for the future.

Push Button. Tail Line. Grin. Harken Electric Winches: They Make Sailing Gloves Last Longer Too.
Nothing adds joy to the sailing experience quite like electric winches. They can be your ticket to years of safe, enjoyable short-handed sailing. And adding them can be the difference between safely staying in your present boat or having to consider a downsize. Here's a secret: most every Harken winch produced since 1999 was designed anticipating a future electrical upgrade. So if you own manual Harken winches, they are ready to be electrified right now. When you decide this fall is the time to power up, your boat dealer, yacht yard or Harken reseller are ready to help.
Electrification can be a surprisingly easy DIY project too. Our available retrofit kits include gear boxes, a variety of motor configurations, and our newest digital system switches.
You don't have Harken winches? Not to worry, we make a full range of electrics for racing or cruising with motor sizes and configurations to make replacement easy, including the new Air winch 900, which introduces a whole new generation of 'power-first' geometries.
Harken. At The Front of making sailing more fun.
RYA to launch pioneering online programme teaching yacht and keelboat racing essentials
For the past twenty years the RYA has been running programmes to help young sailors transition from dinghy racing into yacht and keelboat racing. The current iteration, the British Keelboat Academy (BKA), has seen increasing numbers of young sailors taking advantage of training in multiple boats learning multiple roles.
The 2020/21 British Keelboat Academy intake has proved as popular as ever, with applications coming in from young sailors from all over the country. However, in light of the current situation surround the Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting regional restrictions, we have taken the difficult decision to not run a physical programme this year.
While there is nothing in the current government guidance that would prevent us from being able to run our usual training sessions, we would have had to modify the numbers of sailors on each boat and the onshore learning environment. Having taken time to review the options, we have decided to take the British Keelboat Academy online this year to ensure we can deliver the most effective, engaging learning environment possible while protecting everyone's safety.
The strong team of BKA coaches, led by lead coach Niall Myant and head coaches Mary Rook, Phil Devereaux and Mason King, have been working hard to create an exciting plan for a virtual Academy which will cover the key roles, responsibilities and manoeuvres in yacht and keelboat racing. With sessions planned over the next two months to gather a library of footage on various boats they have a plan to break down the elements into easy-to-understand, bite-sized chunks. The best part is that these videos will be available, for free, not just to Academy members but to everyone.

In a new content series launched today by SailGP, audiences around the globe will get unprecedented access to the sport's pinnacle league as it gears up toward its second season, launching April 2021 in San Francisco.
Through interviews with the league's creators, world-class athletes and leading-edge designers, fans will get to the core of SailGP and learn more about the remarkable story of the global championship, plus get exclusive access to the key personalities within it. The content series will include four episodes that will air prior to Season 2 in 2021. Ahead of that, exclusive short-form videos will debut every two weeks on SailGP's digital channels, starting October 1.
Each of the four episodes of SailGP: Racing on the Edge will have a distinctive theme. The first will get under the skin of the sport's best athletes who compete in the championship and put it all on the line to reach speeds never before seen in sail racing while aiming for the season title and prize of US$1 million.
Episodes two and three will focus on the cutting-edge technology and innovation of the F50 race boats. SailGP: Racing on the Edge will go behind closed doors at Core Builders Composites in New Zealand, where the F50s are continually evolved. The series will follow the design team, which continually seeks new ways to make one of the world's most technologically advanced race boats even faster.
The final episode, which will air ahead of the season opener in 2021, focuses on the future of the league and the role it is taking in shaping the sport.
The series is being produced by Engage Digital Partners, which recently brought to life the story of Indian Premier League team Kolkata Knight Riders and has also produced content series for World Rugby and Major League Baseball.
Green light for Farr 40 Australia Class
After a long and frustrating off season navigating Covid rules and restrictions, the Farr 40 Class has been given the green light to hold their first point score regatta of the season on 17 & 18 October 2020, hosted by Middle Harbour Yacht Club.
Australian Sailing and NSW Health zoning restrictions have now been lifted, and the Class is keen and committed to get all future regattas away with no further postponements.
Both Victorian teams, Double Black and Nutcracker have committed to this weekend's regatta. Owners Rob Pitts and Rob Davis have appointed substitute helmsmen for what promises to be a great first regatta of the season with seven boats on the start line.
Lang Walker has recently sold the iconic Kokomo to a local owner and she will now join the ever-increasing fleet at MHYC. A number of yachts have changed hands recently, which is positive news for the Australian Class with Sydney fleet numbers on the rise.
Due to Covid, the 2020 National Championships which were scheduled to be held back in March were postponed until next month. If the Victorian borders are re-opened, allowing Double Black and Nutcracker owners to travel, the Nationals will go ahead as planned with this regatta the only lead up event. Jeff Carter's Edake and Tom and Alan Quick's Outlaw are the two teams vying for the National Champion crown and the infamous red championship blazer.
After what has been a difficult year for our sport, owners and crew have never been more keen to hit the water and PRO Phil Yeomans has scheduled up to eight races being sailed offshore on Saturday and back inside the harbour on Sunday. -- Jennie Hughes, Farr 40 Australian Class Administrator

Alden, Cooper and Johnson Named to Bermuda Race Roll of Honour
Created in 2006 with the centennial of the first "Thrash to the Onion Patch," the Bermuda Race Roll of Honour recognizes and celebrates extraordinary sailors who have sailed across the Gulf Stream in this unique ocean race. With the addition of John Alden, Kirk Cooper and Bjorn Johnson, there are now 13 individuals on the Roll of Honour.
John Gale Alden (1884-1962). An ocean racing pioneer both as a sailor and as a naval architect specializing in pioneering offshore sailing yachts for Corinthian crews, John Alden raced to Bermuda 10 times in command of his Malabars. He took home trophies in six races and won three races overall (1923, 1926, 1932), setting a record matched only by Carleton Mitchell.
Edmund Kirkland "Kirk" Cooper (1932-2018). A teenager when he sailed the first of his 17 thrashes to his native Onion Patch, Kirk was Royal Bermuda Yacht Club Commodore during the worst storm in the race's history, in 1972. As the 178-boat fleet made the challenging landfall, he provided superb leadership and calmed worried families and anxious government officials.
Bjorn R. Johnson (1955-2018). The 15 "thrashes" he sailed were a fraction of Bjorn's contributions to the Newport Bermuda Race. Race Chairman in 2010, he was an ever creative, knowledgeable, and essential volunteer who cheerfully took on the most challenging assignments. He personified the dedicated volunteer spirit that has sustained the race since it was founded in 1906.
The Bermuda Race Roll of Honour Selection Committee currently includes Chairman John P. Rousmaniere (Cruising Club of America), Stephen Kempe (CCA/Royal Bermuda Yacht Club), John Osmond (CCA), Lawrence Glenn (CCA) and John Winder (CCA/RBYC).
