D-32 Vendee Globe: Sam Manuard, our great adventure
Sam Manuard is looking forward to the Vendee Globe and to what he calls the next chapter in the "great adventure" that he and Armel Tripon's team have been enjoying with their new boat L'Occitane en Provence.
The mean-looking IMOCA in black and gold trim with the scow bow, and with its foils protruding from just below the sheer line, has impressed with its raw speed during the Defi Azimut. Although it has had to have more work done to reinforce its structure, Manuard is now happy that his first venture into the IMOCA fleet is ready to go.
"We have addressed the issues that we discovered and I have no bad feelings about that, so I am pretty confident," said the 49-year-old designer who is based in the Breton town of Vannes. "The boat is subject to super-high slamming loadings and we had to reassess the structure a little bit to take account of those loads."
Manuard may be new to the IMOCA class but he has a long pedigree in Minis and Class 40 design and he knows the most important goal is simply to finish this race. "I think if we finish the Vendee Globe then I am pretty confident the ranking will be pretty good," he said.
"So it's really a matter of finishing the race and I am sure that if we do that the boat is fast. There will be some breakages on the new boats, as we have seen in the last editions, but if you have a good boat and you finish, you will probably be in the top-three or four."
With just one boat in the fleet from his board, you might think Manuard would be feeling the pressure to achieve the sort of performance he had intended for it, but he is relaxed about what lies ahead, as he explained.
"I am not too anxious - what we have done in terms of performance and the dynamic behavior of the boat - in waves, in squalls and in gusts - I am quite happy with because it is in line with our design goals. So that removes a lot of the pressure, I guess," he said.
Seahorse Sailor Of The Month
This month's nominees:
Armel Le Cleac’h (FRA)
A lot of the biggest names in French ocean racing took part in the 2019 Figaro to trial the new foiler. Quite a few went home with egg on face, beaten by the ambitious new faces in the class who wanted nothing more than to take a few big scalps. Few of the big names returned this year, but one who did was the current Vendée Globe champion who believed that with a little more practice while he waited for his new Ultim it couldn’t be so tough. Veni vidi vici
Peter Harken (USA)
The stories are legion, the jokes largely unrepeatable, family, friends and staff at Harken would go to the wall for him. The hounds that he encourages owners to bring to work adore him. As do so many others in the sport who grew up alongside him and Olaf. On the occasion of Peter handing over the reigns of the uniquely friendly and successful business he founded with Olaf 53 years ago there is no one our team has ever wanted to nominate more (PS Sorry, Peter!)
Last Month's winner:
Juan Hector Domato (ARG)
A humble genius. Just a week ago I helped him reassemble three pistons in a Volvo 330hp without taking out the engine… The other fellows watching in the shop did not believe what they were seeing!’ – Claudio Behrens; ‘His boats were fast as hell’ – Vito Contessi; ‘Excellent sailor and also human being. And an excellent fisherman!’ – Leo Olmos; ‘A revolutionary designer’ – Juan Jose Merayo.

Jyrki Jarvi Elected President of the 49er Class
The first ever gold medalist in the 49er class, Jyrki Jarvi of Finland, has been elected as president of the International 49er Class Association. Jyrki is a lifelong sailor in many classes of boats and crewed the Finish 49er to gold in Sydney 2000. October 7th was the 2020 AGM of the 49er Class and after and electronic vote the World Council selected Jyrki to lead the class going forward.
Since his sailing days he has remained a part of the 49er class as founder of the Finish 49er Grand Prix series and more recently as a coach of 49er and 49erFX teams. Jyrki has an extensive knowledge base in all aspects of sailing and sailing management with a strong base in the technical aspects of sailing and the competitive reality of the Olympic journey. He has extensive experience in sponsorship and TV, with the Finish 49er Grand Prix built and maintained over it's long run as a grass roots organization for the introduction of new 49er teams in Finland.
The 49er Class would like to thank Tina Baylis (CAN) who ran for the presidential role of the 49er Class and received strong support in her bid.
Jyrki takes the helm of the class in a strong and stable state from outgoing president, Marcus Spillane. Marcus has been the class president since 2012, and was the class CEO (volunteer) from 2006 to 2012. Over that period of 14 years he has guided the class into a consistent entity for sailors to chase their dreams.
New look Sailing Champions League: Asia Pacific 2021 season
Asia Pacific organisers are delighted to announce the 2021 season format and a raft of changes to simplify the competition and bring gender equity to the league.
For next year's schedule of racing on supplied RS21 keelboats there will be two divisions only - Open and Youth (under 22) and all teams must be 50/50 female and male, with a maximum four crew per boat.
The 2021 circuit will include two qualifying regattas - Southern and Northern - at great venues with dates and details plus the Notice of Race available shortly. Qualifiers will culminate in a new 'Finals Week' concept on Sydney Harbour, from April 13-17, 2021 at a location where the public can spectate and engage with the sailors.
Geelong, home of the Festival of Sails' sailing extravaganza over the Australia Day long weekend, will host the opening qualifier in January 2021 for southern clubs, from Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia.
The Northern Qualifier, on Sydney Harbour in March will be open to entries from the ACT, New South Wales, Queensland and the Northern Territory.
Dates for the Southern and Northern Qualifier will be confirmed shortly via https://sailing-championsleague.asia/ and the league's social media channels.
Lithuanian and Polish teams race VO65s in the Baltic
Two of the newer VO65 teams, Sailing Poland and Ambersail 2 (representing Lithuania) organised a short race series in the Baltic Sea last month, with more racing to come.
The racing took place over two events, each featuring an in-port race and an offshore race. The Lithuanian team won both races in the first event based out of Gdynia.
For the second event, based out of Klaipėda, the Sailing Poland team invited The Ocean Race veteran Bouwe Bekking to join them as coach/skipper and some of his magic rubbed off as the Polish squad evened the score 2-2.
Both the Lithuanian and Polish teams say they are planning to continue this creative partnership and new plans are being discussed. Both VO65 boats are close to each other, even if in different countries, and that makes similar racing initiatives possible. It's a great opportunity for training as well as a chance to spread the word about The Ocean Race, which is the ambition for both projects.

From 30 September to 3 October, 820 eSailors fought it out over three different challenges to make it to the last eight and seal their place in only the third ever eSailing World Championship Final.
Day 1 saw players tested by the J/70 in Auckland, Day 2 presented a challenge in the eF50 - the virtual version of the high-speed catamaran used in SailGP - in San Francisco, and finally our eSailors had to master a Laser in Marseille on Day 3.
The top eight players who have made it to the eSailing World Championship Final are as follows:
1. StipecoachCROATIA (CRO)
2. Donnie Gillies (GBR)
3. Joan Cardona (ESP)
4. Kaan Mazlumca (TUR)
5. Cruzolator (ESP)
6. ramon732@541TOP (ESP)
7. MCES valentinelisa (FRA)
8. MCES pepitõ (FRA)
They will join 2020 eSailGP Champion Dejà Vu (GBR) in the final showdown on 7 November.
The PlayOff process was a difficult one; only two of the eventual 2020 finalists were ranked in the top 10 prior to this stage.
Plenty of previous finalists were also in the mix, such as defending champion Filippo Lanfranchi (ITA), Luca Coslovich (ITA) (3rd in 2019), Alessandro Merlino (ITA) (3rd in 2018) and LaMerNoire (FRA) (two-time finalist).
