IOC raises ethics concerns over Andersen and Perry standing for World Sailing President
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has raised concerns regarding two of the candidates in the World Sailing Presidential election, warning the committee overseeing the upcoming vote that the allegations against them are potentially damaging to the organisation.
In comments relayed in an email from IOC vice-president Ng Ser Miang to the World Sailing Election Committee and attributed to Pâquerette Girard Zappelli, the IOC chief ethics and compliance officer claimed the committee should provide a "full disclosure of the personal situations" of incumbent Kim Andersen and vice-president Scott Perry to members who are due to cast their vote in the election.
The email, seen by insidethegames, refers directly to three World Sailing Ethics Commission cases involving Andersen and the fact Perry is banned from entering the United States.
The potentially crucial intervention from the IOC comes prior to the start of voting in the four-way Presidential tussle, which also includes Spaniard Gerardo Seeliger and Chinese vice-president Quanhai Li, on Friday (October 9).
Uruguayan Perry has admitted he cannot enter the US but claims he does not know the full reasons why and that his legal team are trying to find out. -- Liam Morgan in InsideTheGames.biz
Melges 20 World Championship
The one design sailing season organized by Melges Europe, after an intense tour around Italy, is getting ready to sail on the waters of Argentario and in particular in Marina di Cala Galera which, in the month of October, will be the guest of the two final events of the 2020 calendar.
After a few years of absence from the Argentario Peninsula, which last hosted the Melges 32 World Championship in 2017, the Melges fleets are now returning to Cala Galera also thanks to the strong organizational impulse of the owners Giangiacomo Serena di Lapigio (Melges 32 G-Spot) and Benedetta Iovane (Melges 20 B.Lex).
Competition starts on Wednesday 7 October with the Melges 20 World Championship, and then continues at the end of the month with the final act of the Melges 32 World League circuit, which will crown the winner of the 2020 season.
The spotlight this week is therefore on the Melges 20 fleet which, at the end of four days of racing during which up to ten races can be held, will crown its World Champion.

Vendee Globe: Jeremie Beyou comfortable with being a frontrunner
Jeremie Beyou is clearly not fazed by being one of the hot favourites to win the ninth edition of ocean racing's toughest monohull challenge.
Beyou's status as a likely winner is hard to argue with. His remarkable latest generation foiling IMOCA 60 Charal has been making headlines since it was launched in the summer of 2018 and has been constantly refined since then to put Beyou in his strongest position ever to challenge for the overall trophy on his fourth attempt.
"I think it's quite cool to be thought of as one of the favourites" Beyou told me - his smile easy to spot, despite the obligatory anti-Covid face mask.
"It's the first time for me that this is the case. The other three editions I did I was not in a position to be challenging for a victory, because I didn't have the right boat, I didn't have the right training time, and so on.
"Now with Charal, we the have the time, we have the boat, we have the team, I have much more experience with the previous Vendees and the Volvo I won with Dongfeng."
Beyou was quick to highlight how much his experience sailing fully-crewed on the 2016-17 Volvo Ocean Race had added to his latest Vendee Globe campaign.
"I learned a lot from that experience," he said. "On the Volvo you push really hard all the time. In particular we pushed really hard on the Southern Ocean leg from Auckland to Itajaí.

Sailing icon Tracy Edwards talks to Shirley Robertson
This month, double Olympic gold medalist Shirley Robertson interviews one of sailing's most influential women, as she talks to Whitbread Round The World Race pioneer, Tracy Edwards.
Edwards is best known for leading the first ever all female crew in the 1989-90 edition of the race, a feat she took on at the age of just twenty seven, as skipper of the famous 'Maiden'. Having raced as a cook onboard 'Atlantic Privateer' in the previous edition of the famous race around the planet, as one of just four women in a fleet of over two hundred sailors, she resolved to do whatever it would take to start the race with a crew of her own.
The story of Edwards 'Maiden' team has recently been made into a feature length documentary film, a hit across the film festival circuit and at the box office, in 2019. As part of this podcast, Robertson also talks to New Black Films director Alex Homes about making the film, and gathering all the footage to create what has become a new edition to the list of must see sailing films.
The pair also discuss Edwards' current project, running the inspiring Maiden Factor, a foundation using a now fully restored 'Maiden' to raise awareness and funding for girls' education around the world.
This edition of the podcast is in two parts and is available to listen to via the podcast page of Shirley's own website, at www.shirleyrobertson.com/podcast or via most popular podcast outlets, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcast and aCast.

First IMOCA 60 Boat Build Announced for The Ocean Race 2022-23
Newport, Rhode Island: 11th Hour Racing Team is one step closer in its ambition to compete in and win The Ocean Race 2022-23 with the announcement that the Team is building a brand new IMOCA 60 in Brittany, France.
Skipper, Charlie Enright, and Team CEO, Mark Towill, have brought together three of the most experienced and successful offshore racing expert organizations to conceptualize, design and build the boat.
The new IMOCA 60 is being designed by Guillaume Verdier, one of yacht racing's most prolific designers with America's Cup winners, Ultime record-breakers and was involved in the design of four of the last five Vendee Globe winners. Verdier brings together the very best minds in the offshore sailing world to work collaboratively across all areas including structural design to routing, engineering to computational fluid dynamics.
11th Hour Racing Team's strategic partner for the technical and performance aspects of the new boat build is MerConcept, led by offshore racing veteran François Gabart who won the Vendee Globe in 2012. MerConcept, an Entreprise à Mission [purpose-led company] more recently led the build of Apivia - the latest generation foiling IMOCA, which is a front-runner for the upcoming single-handed round the world race. A group of nearly a dozen engineers, designers and analysts are working on the analytics and data for the performance analysis of the new design.
The boat is being built by CDK Technologies, based out of Lorient and Port-la-Foret, France, who have constructed many of the leading offshore sailing boats in the sport, including the last three winners of the Vendee Globe and the largest racing trimaran ever built, the Maxi Banque Populaire V.
The boat build announcement is the latest news from the Newport, Rhode Island-based Team, which boosted its crew lineup two weeks ago. "We recently announced three new crew members, Simon Fisher, Kyle Langford and Rob Greenhalgh, and will be trialing further crew members to join 11th Hour Racing Team. Thankfully we have a very supportive partner in 11th Hour Racing who has allowed us to stick to the original plan and vision, supporting an extra year's worth of testing, trials, training and racing in the build-up to The Ocean Race 2022-23. It's going to be an incredible journey," concluded Towill.

The Vendee Globe and Sleep
When Alex Thomson ran aground on the rocks in the 2018 Route du Rhum, while he was leading the race and only had to sail around the island of Guadeloupe to finish, alarm bells sounded, even though solo skippers had been well aware of the problem for many years. Yes, sleep is key to performance, but it also affects safety.
Thomas Ruyant knows all about this from his first experience of the Vendee Globe in 2016-2017 and the research done by Remy Hurdiel, a Sports Science doctor at the University of the Opal Coast and his sponsor, Advens, which specialises in computer data protection. The skipper has offered his boat to help LinkedOut and the R&D teams to work on this question of sleep and to set up tools to collect and analyse data.
Remy Hurdiel developed a tiredness management tool using his advanced technology in predicting physical and mental performance based on sleep and wake patterns. This research programme developed in collaboration with researchers from the United States aims to help large companies manage their timetables and workloads.
All of this work aims to contribute to the Big Sleep Data project. At the moment, there is no database available showing how sleep requirements are affected by the demands of solo offshore racing. Remy Hurdiel is trying to get accurate information. Extreme sports (like offshore sailing and ultra-trail) amplify the effects of lacking rest. Alongside the connected belt, a detection system is being developed to identify a drop in alertness.
50th Anniversary Of Cape2Rio Sailing Race Date Announced
Cape2Rio2023, The Royal Cape Yacht Club, Cape Town South Africa in conjunction with the Iate Club Rio de Janeiro are proud to announce that they will proceed with the running of another edition of this Iconic Ocean Racing Classic. The start date is currently mooted as Sunday 2 January 2023. The Cape to Rio Race was first held in 1971.
It attracted an international entry and was won by Ocean Spirit, co-skippered by world renowned sailor Sir Robin Knox Johnson, who had previously become the first man to sail single handed non-stop around the world.
This South Atlantic classic has attracted many great teams over the years, led by the luminaries of Ocean Racing past and present all vying for line and handicap honours in both the Monohull and Multihull divisions. The majestic South Atlantic Trophy has graced many a famous sailor's mantlepiece and we hope to continue this fine tradition.
Referring to the timing of the event, Commodore Gregory noted that December 2022 was going to be a busy time for sailing - both racing and cruising. The City of Cape Town will be hosting The Ocean Race fleet at that time, the Oyster World Rally and ARC World Rally will also be visiting our shores. We will be looking to market the Cape2Rio Race to these visitors as an opportunity to use our event as a feeder into the busy Caribbean Season that commences with the RORC C600. The Caribbean Season provides fantastic events for all classes of boats to enjoy our sport and its camaraderie, Antigua Race Week being a highlight for many sailors globally.
The Organising Authority welcome enquires and encourages potential participants to register their intention to participate by emailing info [AT] cape2riorace [DOT] com. The Notice of Race is scheduled to be published by end October 2020 and will look to be as inclusive as possible, catering for as many classes to ensure the full range of Ocean Racing Teams are catered for.
