The third act of the Melges 32 World League, hosted by Marina di Scarlino thanks to the joint organization of Melges Europe and Club Nautico Scarlino, ends with another exciting day, characterized by strong winds and steep waves.
The winner of the event is Martin Reintjes' Caipirinha, elected World Champion no later than a month ago in the waters of Villasimius and already winner of the seasonal warm-up in July in Malcesine.
On the podium, in second place, we find Giangiacomo Serena di Lapigio with G-Spot, who found the preferred conditions for racing in today's strong wind and, with 2-1 partial scores, recovered important positions in the standings, up to obtaining the silver medal. Third place for Homanit by Gordon Nickel and Maximilian Stein, also winners in the Corinthian category.
With the end of the event of Scarlino, the fleet heads to the Argentario, where from 29 to 31 October it will compete for the fourth event of the Melges World League in the waters of Cala Galera. At the end of the three days of racing, the name of who will succeed Caipirinha in the list of winners of the Melges World League will be determined.
Gentoo wins Race 2 - RORC Two-Handed Series
James Harayda & Dee Caffari, racing Sun Fast 3300 Gentoo, have won the second race of the RORC IRC Two-Handed Autumn Series. Gentoo took line honours in the 128nm race as well as the win on IRC corrected time. Richard Palmer's JPK 10.10 Jangada, raced by Jeremy Waitt and Shirley Robertson, was second, less than five minutes ahead of Sun Fast 3200 Cora, raced by Tim Goodhew & Kelvin Matthews.
The overnight race was held in blustery conditions with about 25 knots from the north to north west. The RORC Race Committee set a course taking in all points of sail and requiring strategic decisions, especially with regards to tidal current and also for wind shadow on the southside of the Isle of Wight.
Undoubtedly the best start was made by Nicola Simper's S&S 34 Blueberry, starting the race at full pace at the Squadron Line. The RORC fleet headed as far west as East Shambles buoy with Outer Nab 2 forming the most easterly point of the course. After a night of hard racing south of the island, the fleet hankered down for a beat back into the Eastern Solent to finish in the early hours of the morning.
James Harayda is just 22-year-old and racing Gentoo with Dee Caffari who has sailed around the world six times. Dee is the first woman to have sailed single-handed and non-stop around the world in both directions. Harayda & Caffari have their sights set on representing Great Britain in the Two Person Offshore Keelboat Event for the Paris Olympic Games in 2024.
The Royal Ocean Racing Club's Two-Handed Autumn Series comes to a conclusion with the last race scheduled to start on Saturday 10th October. Jangada leads the series, followed by Daniel Jones' Sun Fast 3300 Wild Pilgrim. Rob Craigie & Deb Fish's Sun Fast 3600 Bellino is third. -- Louay Habib
Delegate (successfully) - Race Yacht Management
Maintaining a large yacht on the international circuit has never been easy but the current global disruption highlights the many benefits of handing key tasks over to an external specialist
The cost of running a boat of any size is a touchy subject. Dividing the season's expenses by the number of days spent afloat can sit uncomfortably and lead to many of us choosing not to do the calculations. But the current global health crisis and the near universal shut down of the world's racing events has made it a difficult topic to ignore. So, while the formation of the new service company Race Yacht Management was not intended to deal with the implications of a global pandemic, the Palmabased company has found itself catering for just that.
'We set the company up to help deliver the expectations of owners in regattas,' said Mike Atkinson. 'From entering and optimising the boat, providing crew, capitancy work, organising maintenance along with the various aspects of logistics, our original focus was based largely around race yacht management, as our name sets out. But the Covid-19 crisis has led us to develop services to help owners and teams in the more immediate future."

Wirth M. Munroe Ocean Race
The Sailfish Club of Florida and Storm Trysail Club said today its 64rd Annual Wirth M. Munroe Ocean Race will be sailed as scheduled on Friday, December 4th and will feature the two-course format with starts in Miami and Fort Lauderdale that has become popular with racers since its introduction in 2018.
Sailfish Club Race Committee Chair Tom Bowler said 13 boats from 6 states have entered the race to date, among them George Collins' Tripp 62 Chessie Racing from Miami Beach, FL, and Charles Bayer's Andrews 70 Arctos from Grosse Pointe Farms, MI.
Mr. Bowler said the event will be held in compliance with appropriate COVID-19 protocols, including limiting attendance at the post-race awards ceremony and popular buffet dinner to 175 people on a first-come, first-served basis. It is important to note that the circumstances around COVID-19 continue to evolve and change and this may have an effect on how the dinner is conducted.
In 2018, Wirth M. Munroe Ocean Race organizers added a 40-mile course called The Sprint, from Fort Lauderdale to Palm Beach, which complemented the existing 60-mile Miami-to-Palm Beach track, known as The Classic. The Sprint will start off Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, while The Classic will start off Government Cut in Miami Beach. Both courses will finish off the Palm Beach Inlet.
The Classic Course will be scored as part of the SORC's "Islands in the Stream" series, which includes the Miami-Nassau Race, the Lauderdale-Key West Race, and the Miami-Eleuthera Race. The Sprint Course will not be scored as part of the series.
The Organizing Authority for the race consists of The Sailfish Club of Florida, the Storm Trysail Club, the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club. The SORC, Storm Trysail Club, and the Sailfish Club of Florida will oversee race management.
2020 K1 Club Racing Championships - Lockdown Nationals
As with most classes, the K1 class association has seen the cancellation of its 2020 National Championships, and many open meetings due to the Covid-19 situation. In these challenging times the K1 class association were keen to find ways of maintaining contact with its sailors and interest in sailing K1s, particularly as the class is celebrating its ten-year anniversary this year.
Working with RestartSailing and SailRacer, the Class Association came up with an innovative solution to get K1 sailors out racing across the country in a safe socially distanced manner.
The inaugural K1 Club Racing Championships, saw racing at 10 clubs from Teignmouth in the south west to South Windermere, some 270 miles due north. Reflecting the versatility of the K1, the venues reflected a wide cross-section of waters, from the narrows of the River Avon, some 40m wide for the Tewkesbury sailors to the open waters and big waves of Lyme Regis, with a few big reservoirs such as Rutland and Datchet thrown in for good measure.
The flexible format allowed each club to hold at least one race over the weekend (19-20 September), with many incorporating into existing club races, with some managing to run four races.
To record and track their race, each sailor used a pre-configured SailRacer tracker. SailRacer tracking provided live coverage of each race for every competitor and recorded start, leg and finish times for each boat, including the number of laps completed. Friends and family could watch all the races live online, while the sailors could replay their races and learn from a wealth of leg by leg analytics.
Using the SailRacer GPS App the club leads were able to set-up their own races, including pinging their course or using pre-defined club buoy libraries. SailRacer HQ remotely monitored club race configurations and helped where required. Datchet set the longest course (1.9 miles) with Ogston the shortest (0.6 miles).
Overall results

2. Michael Commander, Teign Corinthian YC, 74.3

6. David Tiney, Ogston Sailing Club, 70.6
7. Ian Duke, Datchet Water Sailing Club, 70.5

18 Foot Skiffs: Jack Macartney
A moment at the bottom mark last season but the team recovered to win the national title. Click on image for photo gallery.
The current Australian 18ft Skiff champion Jack Macartney will be back with tech2 in the Australian 18 Footers League's 2020-2021 Season fleet to defend his title and to wipe out the memory of a disappointing JJ Giltinan Championship sailed earlier this year on Sydney Harbour.
Macartney is enthusiastic and has the dedication, a love of sailing and a whole lot of talent necessary to be a winner of major championships, and is determined to erase the memory of the 2020 JJ disappointment.
Jack will again be joined by Charlie Wyatt on the sheet and Lewis Brake, who replaces Trent Barnabas in the bow, for the 2020-2021 Season.
Jack returned to the 18s for the 2019-2020 Season after a two-year break from the class. With the support of a brand new sponsor to the class, tech2, the team were extremely fast right up to the start of the JJ Giltinan Championship in March.
Macartney's new tech2 skiff didn't hit the water until early December when the team finished fifth in Race 2 of the NSW Championship. Despite the late start to the championship, tech2 quickly showed her potential and finished fifth overall in the 18-boat fleet.
The team continued to improve when racing resumed after the mid-season break and consistently strong results gave the team the 2019-2020 Australian Championship as well as the League's Club Championship.
Prior to his 'retirement' in 2017, after finishing runner-up to Michael Coxon's Thurlow Fisher Lawyers in the 2017 JJs, Jack had always been a strong competitor with an outstanding record of consistency in a number of Rag & Famish Hotel-sponsored skiffs.
Jack's early record in the 18s also includes another Australian Championship victory when he teamed with skipper Micah Lane and bow-man Drew Waller to win the 2006-2007 title in Macquarie Real Estate. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.
Tom Dolan: A People's Hero for Irish Sailing
When solo star Tom Dolan was told last Saturday evening that the exceptionally calm condition of the inner Bay of Biscay meant that the proposed final fourth stage of the Solitaire du Figaro 2020 would not be sailed, among the first things he did was to phone his longtime sailing friend Gerry Jones back home in Ireland. For that cancellation of the final stage confirmed the leaderboard on the results of the first three stages, and it resulted in the Meath sailor finishing the 2020 event at fifth overall as the best-placed non-French skipper since 1997.
It says much that, in the instant wave of euphoria and the wild party mood which swept over the leading dozen or so skippers in St Nazaire, Dolan's almost immediate instinct was to contact the sailing friend and mentor whom he'd met many years ago through Glenans Ireland in Baltimore, where Gerry Jones had recognised the young Meath man's enormous natural sailing talent.
It certainly wasn't a talent which you would have expected to emerge from Tom Dolan's background as the son of a farmer in that hidden part of north county Meath beyond the Boyne and the Blackwater. But one day his father happened to glimpse - in a Buy & Sell magazine - a classified ad with photo of a Miracle dinghy. It was a sort of enlarged up-graded Mirror which lacked the magic of the original and had totally failed to catch on in Ireland. Thus the price was for nothing, so a deal was done and the boat collected from Boyle in County Roscommon, and that weekend, Dolan Senior and his young son Tom were fulfilling the father's long-held dream of a little bit of sailing on the nearest decent-sized lake to home, which happens to be rather a classy one, as it's Lough Ramor.

From 1st to 6th October The Genoa International Boat Show Will Welcome Boating Professionals and Enthusiasts for its 60th Anniversary Edition
Click on image for photos from previous shows.
The 60th Genoa International Boat Show will welcome industry professionals and boating enthusiasts alike, from 1st to 6th October, to experience the very best the industry has to offer.
The organizers are working to bring an event that will combine the highest standards of health and safety with an effective approach worthy of the Made in Italy brand and a world-class showcase. Requests for display space have been greater than expected, a sign that the event remains an essential tool for companies worldwide who recognize the value in taking part.
Exhibitors this year will see the return of the major yards in Italy and worldwide who were present last year, in addition to a number of new brands. As of today, these include a selection of industry-leading names: for motorboats Amer Yachts, Arcadia, Azimut-Benetti, Ferretti Group through FSD - Ferretti Security Division, Fipa Group, Pardo, Princess, Sanlorenzo, Sunseeker, VanDutch; for sailing boats, Beneteau, Dufour, Hanse, Jeanneau, Nautor's Swan, Mylius Yachts, Solaris and Vismara. This year a brand new area will be dedicated exclusively to Superboats. A full roster for outboards as well, along with an already substantial number of equipment and services-related companies.
The 2020 edition will see the implementation of a key plan of action aimed at creating a flexible layout that can adapt to a variety of scenarios. Supporting the organisers in this endeavour will be a Task Force made up of experts in engineering and legal practice. Plans are already in place to ensure the best organizational conditions, in line with the parameters defined by the World Health Organisation. This is only possible due to key innovations in relation to logistics, remote management and controlled access, all within an entirely new vision based on the large open-air spaces available.
The online ticketing is playing a central role, allowing visitors to purchase their tickets via the event's official website www.salonenautico.com. The online platform is the only channel for purchasing tickets, which will quickly be assigned to specific visiting days to allow for an effective level of crowd management and to prevent over-selling. Access to the Show area will be strictly monitored and automated.
Finding sponsors in spite of the crisis
Given the current public health situation and the economic difficulties that have arisen, there was the fear that some sailors who had not completed their budget for the Vendée Globe might have found it hard to find sponsors. However, Romain Attanasio managed to secure a partnership right in the middle of the lockdown, while more recently, Alexia Barrier, Clément Giraud and Benjamin Dutreux have succeeded in their attempts to convince sponsors and to ensure they have the budget required to compete in the round the world race.
For his second attempt at the Vendée Globe, Romain Attanasio found a headline partner - PURE - early on, but kept looking for another one to ensure he could feel relaxed while preparing for his solo round the world voyage. It was at the worst point in the middle of the lockdown that Romain won over the Best Western hotel chain.
Competing aboard the oldest IMOCA in the fleet, Alexia Barrier is one of the six women registered for the 2020 Vendée Globe. In early August, she was looking for 400,000 euros to complete her budget. “Things got moving when I was least expecting, right in the middle of August,” explained the sailor. “I was contacted by one of the directors of the TSE company, which specialises in renewable energy. He happened to come across an article about how I was searching for funding. We met up and TSE invested a total of 300,000 euros. That was a fantastic reward after battling it out for two years, during which I remained convinced that I could do it. The work finally paid off.”
It would be something of an understatement to say that Clément Giraud fought hard to make sure he would be there at the start of the 2020 Vendée Globe. After the fire aboard his IMOCA a few days before the start of the 2019 Transat Jacques Vabre, he won the support of a generous skipper in the class, Erik Nigon, who lent him his boat early this year. Since then, Clément has been busy looking for funding and it was only recently that it all sorted itself out, just as registrations for the Vendée Globe were about to close. Two firms announced they were signing up, La Compagnie du Lit (which was alongside Stéphane Le Diraison back in 2016) and Jiliti.
Benjamin Dutreux also managed to complete his budget right in the middle of the public health crisis, thanks to the arrival of a major, new partner alongside the Water Family association: OMIA, a small business specialising in manufacturing and maintaining spray paint booths.

Hamad Issa al-Mannai, CEO of Al Mannai Plus Events, has announced that the 7th Qatar International Boat Show (QIBS) will take place from November 16-20 at The Pearl-Qatar's Porto Arabia.

The organisers of the Toronto International Boat Show (TIBS) announced late Monday that the 2021 edition of North America's largest indoor boat show has been cancelled in the face of growing Covid-19 infection rates.
The development of an apparent second wave of Covid-19 infections in the province of Ontario, combined with continued delays to federal approval of rapid testing protocols by the Canadian government, have left show organisers with little option but to cancel the event for the first time in its 62-year history.
A decision on a potential virtual element to replace the 2021 TIBS will be made in the coming weeks, said Linda Waddell, president/show director for event owner, Canadian Boat Shows Inc. , as the event organisers review possible options with exhibitors. "We have been exploring online virtual options," she said. "There will be a focus on looking to the future, expanding digital and unifying the in-person experience to deliver even more value to the Toronto Boat Show community."
