Melges 32 Having greeted the gusts of Mistral which, just a few days ago, made the first stage of the Melges 32 World League unique, the protagonists of the class met again today between the marks of Villasimius to start the World Championship. A generous easterly sea breeze awaited the crews, increasing in intensity during the afternoon, when the most intense gusts reached 13 knots.

The ranking that emerged at the end of this first day is definitely interesting. A ranking which, among the favorites, sees only Donino by Luigi Giannattasio confirm the predictions made at the eve of this Championship: following the tactical choices of the Spanish Manuel Weiller, Donino conquered the first leadership of the event, trailed by three points the guys of Homanit, second, and best of the Corinthians, on the equals with Caipirinha of Martin Reintjes, who focused today on regularity of results and promises battle in the days to come.

The Hungarian team of Farfallina also appears in the upper areas of the standings: led by Arpad Schatz is fourth and scored the first bullet of this World Cup which, on the starting line, sees seven Nations represented, demonstrating the excellent state of health of this competitive one-design class.

Tomorrow the show will be repeated, with departure set for 1 pm, when a south-westerly breeze of between 11 and 13 knots should blow on the race course of Villasimius.

ETNZ Allegations - Ministry Finds No Evidence
Joint Statement from Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment, Auckland Council, Emirates Team New Zealand Ltd and America's Cup Event Ltd

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), in consultation with host partner Auckland Council, has completed its audit into allegations made against Emirates Team New Zealand Limited (ETNZ) and America's Cup Event Limited (ACE).

The Beattie Varley report found that there was no evidence of financial impropriety or misappropriation of funds.

The report also found:

- there was no loan from ACE to ETNZ,
- there was no fraud by ACE or ETNZ,
- that no personal expenses of Grant Dalton or any other personnel were paid from Crown monies,
- that there has been no financial impropriety of any nature.

Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment Chief Executive Carolyn Tremain said, "While it's excellent to confirm that there has been no financial impropriety and the escalation process has concluded, the Beattie Varley report had raised some concerns around record keeping relating to several historical matters."

The process began after MBIE and Auckland Council (as Hosts) were made aware of claims relating to the organisation of the 36th America's Cup, which prompted an investigation by forensic accountants Beattie Varley and triggered an escalation process under the Host Venue Agreement.

"It was important to work through the audit process, and confirm that there was no financial impropriety or misappropriation of funds," said Carolyn Tremain.

The summary findings of the report can be viewed HERE, as prepared by Beattie Varley.

M32 2020 World Championship Cancelled
It is with a heavy heart that the M32 Class board has made the decision to cancel the 2020 World Championship scheduled for Miami in November. The current travel climate due to the COVID19 situation does not allow for intercontinental travel in a way that we need to have a proper World Championship. With the logistics involved in running and competing in a World Championship we can not wait to see how restrictions evolve this fall.

The M32 Class would like to thank all their friends and partners in Miami for the work and effort that has been made planning for this event. The M32 community love Miami and we hope to be back soon.

The M32 racing continues on a continental level and it's a sad fact that travel across oceans will be complicated for some time to come.

In North America the Midtown Cup Series started in July and just successfully completed their second event with an 8 boat fleet of mostly local teams. The series continues with events in September and October. A North American Championship will be the season closer for the US fleet and the original dates for the worlds are considered for that event.

In Europe the delayed season started in sailors favourite venue Marstrand in August and the fleet is moving on to another favorite venue, Riva del Garda, for the European Championship in September. Due to the late start the European fleet will extend the season with another event in Italy in October.

Over the next few weeks the class board will work with members, boat owners and organizing venues around the world to plan for successful future World Championships.

Preparing For A Return To Sport
For OC Sport Pen Duick, the team are now delighted to confirm that the 51st edition of the Solitaire du Figaro is set to take place this year, with over 30 skippers preparing to take to the start line at the historic Brittany town of Saint-Quay-Portrieuc in north-west France on 30th August 2020.

But what can we expect from this edition of the race? How will it be different and what measures have been put in place? We spoke with Alex Picot, Project Manager at La Solitaire du Figaro to find out more.

On asking how the skippers reacted and adapted throughout the last few months, Alex was blown away by their response and dedication. "We have 36 skippers set to participate in the race so far. It is incredible to see how attached and committed people are to this event. The skippers and everyone involved were patient and understanding over the last few months as we continued to monitor the situation. They simply wanted a sporting goal to aim towards this year and a chance to race and asked us to do our best to try and manage a safe race for them."

Recognised as the one of the most demanding offshore racing in the world, the very nature of the race allows social distancing to be less of a problem for the participants, meaning few adaptions needed to be made on the water. On shore, the organisation are preparing for a different set-up, with Alex talking about the possibility of "running race briefings, prize-giving's and press conferences online via a video conference."

SailGP makes its Hollywood debut
SailGP makes its Hollywood debut today when two F50s take a starring role in the summer's big blockbuster Tenet, a new sci-fi spy thriller by acclaimed director Christopher Nolan.

The much-anticipated blockbuster, starring John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Michael Caine and Kenneth Branagh, was filmed across the world in seven locations - including Southampton, UK - and when the script required an epic sailing scene, SailGP answered the call.

Following Cowes SailGP in August 2019, two F50s - the Japan and U.S. boats - were rebranded exclusively for the Hollywood movie and SailGP's world-class athletes took part in the filming, although it will be a struggle to spot them thanks to the magic of cinematography.

U.S SailGP helm Rome Kirby and SailGP Season 1 champion Tom Slingsby of the Australia team were two of the athletes involved and spent a week at the helm of the F50s - one white and one blue - setting up dramatic, boat-on-boat scenes in the Solent, under the watchful eye of Nolan from a helicopter.

SailGP Season 2 will restart in San Francisco and New York in April and June of next year. Following the U.S. leg of the championship, grand prix events will take place in each of the European team markets: the UK, Denmark, France and Spain. The league plans to hold 7-9 events as part of Season 2, and will feature racing in the Australia/New Zealand region in the early part of 2022.

SailGP will debut in Tenet, out August 26. Full details and exclusive behind the scenes content plus the story of the filming can be found at SailGP.com/hollywoodpremiere

Lipton Cup and International Masters Regatta are canceled
Two more regattas have been canceled this year, in the name of Covid-19. San Diego Yacht Club announced the formal cancelations of the 2020 Lipton Cup and 2020 International Masters Regatta.

This year was supposed to be the 106th running of the Lipton Cup. Racing was scheduled to take place Oct. 22-25, with J/105 class boats competing against each other in San Diego. Up to 12 teams can compete in the regatta; the teams are selected based upon timely responses to the "Invitation to Challenge" (in addition to general qualifications and fee payments).

Newport Harbor Yacht Club won the 2019 iteration of the Lipton Cup. The Lipton Cup trophy is in Newport Beach, and will remain there until another winner claims the hardware - which won't happen until 2021, at the earliest.

The International Masters Regatta was scheduled to take place at South San Diego Bay, Oct. 15-17. The regatta is also limited to 12 teams, competing against each other with J/105s.

Skippers must reach his or her 60th birthday by or before Dec. 31, 2020 to be eligible for this regatta; eligible crew must be 45 by or before Dec. 31, 2020, just the same. -- Parimal M. Rohit in The Log
