Race the Wight - RORC race around the Isle of Wight
Saturday 1st August 2020- Open to Two Handed and Family/Household teams

A race around the Isle of Wight on Saturday 1st August will see the return to competitive racing at the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) - the first since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The race will replace the originally scheduled Channel Race and is open to COVID-19 compliant crews following Government regulations in both the Two Handed and family/same-household classes. Starting from the Royal Yacht Squadron line in Cowes, the 50-nautical mile race will adhere to the latest Government guidelines and advice from the RYA and World Sailing. The safety of all competitors, staff and volunteers are of primary concern as the RORC continues to monitor the Coronavirus outbreak carefully.
The fleet will race anti-clockwise, heading westwards towards Yarmouth, leaving the Solent and rounding the famous Needles Lighthouse before making their way along south-west coast of the Island to St. Catherine's Point before crossing Sandown Bay to round the Bembridge Ledge. The fleet then makes its way either side of No Man's Land Fort and across Osborne Bay to the finish line back at Cowes.
RORC member, Mike Slade’s ICAP Leopard raced around the course in 3h 43m and regular RORC racer, Ned Collier Wakefield took just 2h 22m on the MOD70 Concise 10 - just short of Brian Thompson’s ratified World Sailing Speed Racing Council record of 2h 2m 31s in Phaedo3 in Sept 2016! Although these records show the potential speeds possible from these impressive racing machines, the course can take anything up to 12 hours for some of the smaller entries.
All competitors will register their own finish times after crossing the line and submit them for the final results.
“It should be a very nice day of racing for those two handed teams who can follow the guidelines and those sailing families/households who can do the same,” continues Stone. “Sadly the timing of the tides doesn’t allow us to include the smaller entries, but we think we can give most people a start and their first longer race since the lockdown. Staff and volunteers are really looking forward to Race the Wight as well; I think it’s good for everyone.
“We have some nice Musto prizes for the class winners and for our overall winner, and with entry fees going to the Scaramouche Sailing Trust and the NHS, we couldn’t be happier about the whole event. It’s a great way to re-start the season,” concludes RORC Racing Manager, Stone.
Luca Devoti, A Sailor For The Sailors
Valencia, Spain - Luca Devoti, (57, Verona, Italy, based in Spain since 2005) shares his vision with the international sailing community about a new sustainable sport. The Italian Finn Silver Medalist and former America's Cup skipper is officially an aspiring candidate for Vice-Presidency of the 2020-2024 World Sailing Board.
"I have thought long and hard about presenting this candidacy. I have a huge respect for those who, before me, have steered World Sailing. At the same time, I believe I can provide value by contributing my experience and passion at these difficult times, and therefore I am ready and willing to stand up as a candidate.
I believe that my past and current professional engagement in different activities in the sailing world provide me with a comprehensive insight into the culture and interests of sailors, coaches, different MNA's and manufacturers".
A sailor all his life, Luca Devoti started his sport career in Lake Garda (Northern Italy) at the age of 18 and won an Olympic Silver Medal (Finn Class) in Sydney at the age of 38.
Skipper for the Italian team +39 in the 32nd America's Cup (Valencia, 2007), Luca Devoti also founded Devoti Sailing, an independent manufacturer that has sold over 5,000 boats since 1993. Still involved in competitive sailing, Luca Devoti launched the Dinghy Academy in Valencia, where is now coaching young Olympic class sailors.

Match Cup Marstrand To Host Local Event For 2020
GKSS Match Cup Marstrand, the long standing world championship level event of the World Match Racing Tour, will be staged this year 2-4 July with locally invited teams and no on-shore activities, due to the impact of the global Covid-19 crisis. The popular Swedish match racing event remains part of the World Match Racing Tour and will return as a world championship level event of the Tour in 2021.
For this year’s scheduled event, organisers GKSS (Royal Gothenburg Yacht Club) and marketing agency CREATE will host twelve local teams over the shortened three day event, competing in the GKSS owned Far East 28 Regatta boats, and including the Nordea Women’s Trophy. It is the second consecutive year that sponsor Nordea has supported the Women’s Trophy in Marstrand.
Confirmed skippers include last year’s Nordea Women’s Trophy winner Anna Ostling (SWE), Swedish Olympic gold medallist Max Salminen, local favourite Johnie Berntsson (SWE), defending Match Racing World Champion Phil Robertson (NZL), and America’s Cup sailor Kyle Langford (AUS). Both Robertson and Langford are currently resident in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Patrizio Bertelli has been awarded with the Career "Velista dell'Anno - Tribute"
Patrizio Bertelli has been awarded the “Velista dell’Anno - Tribute” organized by Giornale della Vela, in recognition of his 50 years of sailing and 20 years of the America’s Cup, always at top levels, first Italian to be inducted in the America’s Cup Hall of Fame, in 2012. A long career, as sailor and owner, marked by six America’s Cup campaigns and several international achievements in various boat classes, classic and not.
Patrizio Bertelli commented: “I am thankful for this award, that I believe should also be extended to the larger Luna Rossa team, that embraces all of those who have worked in the team over the last 20 years. They are my friends, the sailors with whom I go sailing. We are a team in the team. We recognize each other from afar. And I dedicate the award to my wife, Miuccia, who has always supported me and encouraged me in the America’s Cup projects.

Getting people sailing in small boats has been Hamble River Sailing Club’s mission since it was founded 101 years ago and that zeal to succeed has never been more needed than during the current COVID-19 crisis. Yacht and XOD racing on Wednesday evenings recommenced on June 3rd restricted to single household crews only and with amended SI’s so that handicap class yachts race without spinnakers and all boats 'self start' at a fixed time and then take their own finish times.
Meanwhile dinghy sailing is going strong with junior sailing for up to six of the more experienced Level 3 cadets racing, while the more leisurely MOB and WOW groups (Men on Beer & Women on Water!) are going sailing in club dinghies on evenings when the tide time suits. 'SUP’ paddle boards are available for hire by members and friends or ‘bubble groups’ and the super-keen Foxer dinghy fleet is racing as usual on Sunday mornings including last weekend with a special pursuit race sponsored by the King and Queen.
The credit for much of the enthusiasm to get the dinghy sailing happening goes to 21-year-old Alice Ryan, once a junior cadet in the strong HRSC training programme and now a qualified RYA instructor and also a member of the club’s sailing committee. Alice commented: "I know how important my sailing is to me and I love seeing young children getting involved and enjoying being out on the water!"
All those taking part in club racing are tasked with maintaining strict social distancing with wash down routines for boats and equipment as appropriate to minimise risk to club members and helpers, and the social side in not being neglected either, with take away drinks available outside on the patio after racing with a strict safety regime. HRSC welcomes new members and looks forward to resuming full activities including sail training when RYA guidance and social distancing can be relaxed further.

RYA eSailing Spring Class Championship Finalists Revealed

Over the last two months, 788 sailors, representing 26 classes have been battling it out on the virtual waters, in an attempt to represent their class in the national final of the RYA eSailing Spring Class Championship.
Getting through to the final is no easy feat, not only does it mean beating fellow class racers in a class championship, but it also means beating other class champions to stake claim to a place in the final.
A total of 26 racers competed in two semi-finals which took place over the weekend of 13 June, with the top 19 going through to the final and we can now reveal the full line up for the final this weekend (Saturday 20 June).
The final will air live on the RYA YouTube Channel and Facebook page at 09.00am on Saturday 20 June with live commentary from Jack Fenwick, RYA Keelboat Development Manager and Sam Usher, RYA NE Regional Development Officer. Tune in and cheer on your class champion.
The winner will receive an Essential 45L Dry Tube, courtesy of Musto, a dryrobe plus a virtual Q&A session for their class with a member of the British Sailing Team.

Entry Open for 5.5 Metre European Championship in Sanremo
The International 5.5 Metre Class Association and Yacht Club Sanremo are delighted to announce that entry is open for the 2020 European Championship in Sanremo, Italy from 23-29 August.
Registration and measurement will take place from Sunday 23 to Monday 24 September, with racing from Tuesday 25 to Saturday 29 September. A series of 10 races is scheduled.
Traditionally the 5.5 Class holds its European Championship only when the World Championship is outside Europe, so this will be the first European Championship since 2013, when it was won by the current World Champion Artemis XIV. The 2020 World Championship was held in Newport, Australia in January.

Historic Dublin Bay to Cork Harbour Yacht Race Postponed to 2022
Some offshore racing enthusiasts may have been hoping that the historic re-enactment of the “Kingstown to Queenstown" Race of 1860 - the first proper offshore event in Irish and British waters - might still have been staged in some very muted form, with minimal shoreside interaction in order to comply with post-COVID-19 restrictions. But those directly involved have now made a clear decision that to do so would be entirely at variance with the spirit of the race, which is to be a celebration of offshore racing both in Ireland and internationally, with a highly sociable shore-side element in Cobh after the finish.
The leading race organiser at the Cobh finish, South Coast Offshore Racing Association Commodore Johanna Murphy, has issued an informal statement outlining the thinking behind the way things will go, as plans take shape to stage the race in 2022:
“The Kingstown to Queenstown Race is postponing to 7/7/22 in light of COVID-19. The race is being run by Cove Sailing Club and the National Yacht Club, and will start from the NYC and finish at the Old Yacht Club (now the Sirius Centre) in Cobh. After the finish, there’ll be festivities on the Cobh waterfront, including of course a talk on the history of the iconic race by the one and only Eddie English. The prize-giving will follow, and I will be organising a barbecue in the Quays, while now that CSC marina is up and running, there will be visitor berthing available.
All the mechanics of the race will be worked out nearer the time, but it’s definitely one for the diary - after all, what’s another two years when we have waited since 1860? The June-July programme for 2021 is already solidly booked, so to do this iconic and historic race justice, we need to make the clean break to 2022. It deserves the chance to be a fantastic race, and will I feel it be a popular event nationally and internationally, and a chance for the Clubs and sailors to come together - which is what much of sailing is all about. And It will also tie in nicely with Cork Week 2022, which is 11th - 15th July 2022."
International Melges 24 Fleet Heads to Torbole
Taking note of the improvement in the overall health situation underlined, albeit with due caution, by the Governments of the European Union, the management of the Class of the old continent, led by IM24CA Vice President Europe Miles Quinton, owner of Gill Race Team (UK); met in a video conference along with the Executive Committee Member Europe Michael Tarabocchia, owner of White Room (GER); the Championship Coordinator David Bartol and the Class Administrator Piret Salmistu to define the calendar of the 2020 European season and trace a path that will lead one of the most active one design fleets from the Garda Lake to Trieste passing through Austria and Slovenia.
The management wisely decided to avoid starting in the month of July in light of the fact that the announced return of competitive activity in Italy did not imply the automatic possibility for foreign teams to travel without the risk of having to spend long quarantine periods once returned to the country of origin. Following the logic of fair sailing, which has always been the basis of the activity of the Melges 24, it was decided to return to full activity in the second weekend of August.
Between 7 and 9 August, therefore, Torbole and the Garda Lake, in Italy will be the scene of the resumption of the competitive activity of Melges 24 in its international version. After three weeks (28-29 August), the second regatta is scheduled on Lake Attersee, in Austria.
In a very tight turn, from the Austrian inland waters, the fleet will head to nearby, where between 11 and 13 September, Portorož in Slovenia will host the third round of the European Sailing Series 2020. A welcome confirmation, from the renowned Slovenian venue, host for several season of really competitive events to the point of being chosen as the venue for the Europeans 2020, postponed to 2021 due to the Covid-19 emergency.
A forward-looking choice made by the class management, given that the final stage of the circuit has been set for October 2-4 in Trieste, Italy - only a few kilometers away from the Slovenian location, where boats and trailers can calmly wait to be transferred to Italy.
