Le Cam Goes Diving After three failed attempts to get rid of the net by moving his boat, the SynerCiel skipper eventually decided that he was left with no choice but to dive under it, which took around thirty minutes at 10am GMT this morning. He stopped the boat, put on his scuba diving equipment and took his knife with him. Everything went well and SynerCiel is now back in the race. At midday, Jean Le Cam called his team and explained: "After trying everything I could to get rid of that net, I had no choice, I had to dive. I geared up, stopped the boat, and went for it. At first I tried to cut it all at once but it just wasn't working. I said to myself 's**t, that's not good'. So I cut one part after the other and it worked out. It was a huge net!" Despite being born to sail Jean Le Cam, nicknamed 'Le Roi Jean', or King Jean, does not like swimming at all, so it was very grumpy King that was forced to make like a rebellious fish, and cut himself free of the net today. The incident has cost him a few miles and a place in the rankings to Mike Golding but he is now back in action * At 20:01, Francois Gabart announced that his team that he crossed the longitude of the first ice gate. He has the privilege of now leading the way into the formidable Indian Ocean. Snapping at his heels are Jean-Pierre Dick (Virbac-Paprec 3) and Armel Le Cleac'h (Banque Populaire) Top Ten Rankings as of Sunday 02 December 2012, 20h00 (FR) Jeremy Koo Sails Into The Monsoon Cup Jeremy who had previously won the first and second stage of the circuit held at the Royal Malaysian Naval Base in Lumut, Perak and Marina Jabatan Laut in PulauIndah, Selangor earlier this year only need to get thru to the final to clinch the overall title based on the MMRC points scoring system. Navy skipper Masyuri Rahmat was his only contender after 3 stages of the circuit with 3 points separating them. In order to have qualified to the Monsoon Cup, Masyuri needed a win at this stage with Jeremy coming in third. Jeremy Koo will make his third appearance at the Monsoon Cup, which begins on 3rd December. MMRC Final Stage-Pulau Duyong : Qualifying Results Semifinal Results www.monsooncup.com.my WMRT Trophy Arrives In Malaysia Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia: The Alpari World Match Racing Tour Trophy arrived in Malaysia today in front of a legion of sailing fans who have already started to arrive in Kuala Terengganu for the season finale, the Monsoon Cup. The trophy, made by Garrard - the world's oldest jewellers - was first awarded in 2011 to Ian Williams (GBR) GAC Pindar. No less than eight teams can still mathematically win it this week and each of them will have made their pre-event computations of the leader board. They know each race is a potential Championship game-changer. Tomorrow will conclude all the pre-event ceremonial duties with racing due to get underway on Tuesday. Speaking about the pressure the teams will need to handle, AWMRT Tour Director, Craig Mitchell, said: "Every match is a battle in this sport but at the Monsoon Cup, things are ramped up to another level. You only have to look back over the last couple of year when Mathieu Richard and then Torvar Mirsky were eliminated in the qualifying stage, despite having expectations to challenge for the overall Tour title. "It will be close. The likelihood is that we'll have a big multiway tie after Qualifying and there will be a count back to determine some of the teams progressing to the Quarter Final. Once the teams manage to book their slot in the knockout rounds, it is a very different beast. All of the teams will leave the dock, aiming for that 6 point score line that should see them through to the knockout rounds, that'll be the key focus." Referring to the battle for overall Tour victory, Mitchell continued: "Bjorn [Hansen] got his points on the board early this year and he's never had a better chance to take his first title. Having said that, there isn't such a breakaway group this season and all of the other guys, right down to Johnie Berntsson in eighth can win it mathematically if the stars align. "For the fans that have followed the battle between the top two all season, the dream final would be Hansen vs. Williams and that would be an amazing match, with the highest possible stakes. Either way, the standard of sailing on show will be unparalleled here in Malaysia." We've extended the time limit to submit your entry for your favorite bar until this FRIDAY December 7. Mostly because we love reading them. Send to : scuttlebutteurope.com/sailors-bars.html ----------------------------------------------- Favorite Bar: The Dragon Bar at Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club in Western Australia (pictured) - www.rfbyc.asn.au Help! Dragons have taken over our bar! But seriously, Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club's new outdoor which opened in May 2012 has become a place where our 'The Dragoners' (Dragon boat sailors) converged on the Dragon Bar at the end of the racing day to tell their tales. The bar sits on top of a cliff by the Marina, where Members and their guests can watch over their sleeping Dragons, nestled in safely underneath the cliff hang. The Dragon bar offers Premium beers on tap or in bottles, a great wine list but most of all - we do cocktails, many of which include a Vodka base! It's the sort of bar that really makes one happy to be living and sailing in Perth, watching the sun set over the Freshwater Bay. ----------------------------------------------- Favourite Bar: The Pier View, Cowes, Isleof Wight Sue and her staff provide a superb service always with a smile in spite of "some" obnoxious visiting clients from the North Island. In particular, thanks from the internationally known" MONDAY CLUB ", a cabal of cantankerous chaps who reorganize the government and Brussels on a weekly basis. Sue and the girls look after the food and wine for these reprobates and are very much appreciated ----------------------------------------------- Favourite Bar: Navi Bar Glucksburg it's perfect, because sometimes they cancel the "last order" and leave the bar open ;-) and i don't need more than fresh beer and a little snack ----------------------------------------------- Favourite Bar: Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club's Main Bar Why Favourites: I have to share with you a quote from Sir Robin Knox-Johnston from his welcome speech at the ICOYC (International Council of Yacht Clubs) Commodores' Forum in Hamble in September this year.... "I looked at the list of clubs represented here and realised that I had reduced my wealth across the bars of 11 of you over the past 50 years! From memory, the quietest has been the Royal Bombay Yacht Club and the nosiest, just ahead of the Royal Cork, is the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club and everyone who visits them knows that the RHKYC in party mood is a very dangerous animal indeed." He couldn't have said it better! New J-Class To Be Built In The UK Spirit Yachts, based in Ipswich on the River Orwell, is reported to be about to start building a new £15 million J class racing yacht, the first to be built in Britain for 75 years. A Spirit yacht, a Spirit 54 famously featured in the James Bond movie, Casino Royale. The new J to be named Cheveyo, will take three years to build to the Ranger 77B design, one of the original series of six designs submitted by Starling Burgess and Olin Stephens to Harold Vanderbilt for the 1937 America's Cup defence. The new 135 feet long yacht will be only the eleventh of the J-class yachts ever to be built, and unusually will be built in wood rather than aluminium, using the sophisticated wood/epoxy build technique that Spirit Yachts specilises in. The name Cheveyo means Spirit warrior (Hopi) in Native American. The yacht has been commissioned by a US-based syndicate of investors and sailing enthusiasts. Only the eleventh of these incredible, beautiful, slim and fast J class yachts ever to be built, Cheveyo will be of Douglas fir from Scandinavia Naval Architect: Sparkman & Stephens Inc. Greenwich CT. USA Gerald New's full report in Sail-Web A Proud America's Cup Tradition Two protests have been lodged with the International Jury. And the Jury Chairman has responded with a terse reminder to teams about leaking Jury documents to the media The first revolves around espionage by the America's Defender, Oracle Team USA, and would seem to be the latest round of a long Cup tradition of information gathering on competitors, during the vital final design window before the commencement of the America's Cup Regatta. The latest incidents appear to arise from some cute wording in the 34th America's Cup Protocol, which require that unauthorised teams, are not allowed to navigate within 200 metres of another competitor. In a cute interpretation of the word 'navigating', Oracle Team USA are believed to be stopping their RIB outside a 200 metre circle of the New Zealand and Italian AC72's but obviously on their direct sailing line, and then waiting for the competitor they are observing to sail past in close proximity, and taking images plus other performance measurement devices, well within the 200 metre circle. By being stopped, it is believed the team claim they are not 'navigating' in the context of the Protocol. Their opponents would claim that they are required to stay outside a 200 metre circle at all times. They have recovered from losing an important overall class win in the Telecoinabox Airlie Beach Race Week in August to hand the local club fleet a lesson in the prevailing 12 knot tropical sea breeze to eventually record a 3 minute 4 second win over the Rod Sawyer helmed Peter Norlin designed Surefoot and the Joe Adams designed Damien Betts skippered Grizzly. This trio of radically different designed yachts provided an interesting comparison for the Club handicapper who seems sure to adjust the individual time correction factors before Bobby D has the opportunity to remain as the combination to beat of the race track. Sure their win was full of merit and it would be unfair if skipper Ross Winterbourne and his happy crew on Bobby D were slugged for simply sailing smart. But the .861 correction factor is set to be changed after they recorded one of the best wins of the season. The same will apply to Surefoot .977 and Grizzly .861 while respecting the fact of being outpaced on handicap by Bobby D were a class above the rest finishing almost 2 minutes ahead of fourth placed Sandpiper skippered by new owner Chris Chengody. Tulip the Bernie Van't Hof skippered Swan 45 predictably dominated the line honours when his major rival the Charles Wallis helmed Murray, Burns Dovell designed 41 Reignition failed to complete the course. The Tulip crew were almost ready to prepare the mooring lines when Rod Sawyer steered Surefoot into second a little over 9 minutes astern while Kevin Fogarty's Beneteau First 40 Twister claimed third another 2 minutes later. However while the Bobby D crew remained buoyant over their impressive Division 2 class win Peter Michelson expressed his lengthy experience of racing on Pioneer Bay to steer his Austral Clubman 8 Lorna Rose Too, to an equally impressive line and handicap win in Division 3. The Lorna Rose Too crew made all the time saving tactical decisions to win the class line honours from the Alan Sneddon skippered Pacific Phoenix and the Dan White helmed Riff Raff. There clever tactical strategy also resulted in Lorna Rose Too recording a runaway 4 minute 38 second win on handicap with Anthea (Dewi Hughes) and Pacific Phoenix filling the minor places. -- Ian Grant Featured Brokerage VINTAGE is a superb modern classic with sweet lines drawn by Julius Strawinsky, who's ALEXA you may know.
