Wet and Wild Penultimate Day of Sail Melbourne International
It was a challenging day for sailors and race management alike with multiple storm fronts passing through Melbourne on the penultimate day of Sail Melbourne International making for another wild and fun day for the majority of the classes.
Despite the weather challenges several of the fleets managed to get all races in, while some were cancelled for the day due to high winds and sea stage.
Amongst those abandoned were the para-sailing classes 2.4mR and Liberty, as well as the Laser 4.7 which were cancelled for the day before going out. The International 505 class did venture out, but with winds increasing, racing had to be abandoned and subsequently cancelled for the day.
Tuesday will be the final day of Sail Melbourne International 2020 with another two races scheduled in most classes from 12:00 p.m.
Over 300 competitors from 25 countries are competing at Sail Melbourne International with racing to continue on Tuesday for the fifth and final day of the day of the event and with racing scheduled to commence from 12:00 p.m. at both Sail Melbourne International race venues Royal Brighton Yacht Club and Sandringham Yacht Club (Laser fleets).

The Tea Route : 180 miles ahead after two days of racing
It is clear that in spite of the demanding conditions, everyone is enjoying being back sailing on the high seas, as they tackle their latest record attempt between Hong Kong and London. This morning, this has led to the crew of IDEC SPORT achieving a decent lead of more than 180 miles after the first days of racing over the time set by the holder of the Tea Route record, the 70-foot trimaran, Maserati.
Francis Joyon and his crew of four have been making the most of a steady NE'ly wind offering them downwind sailing since Saturday. IDEC SPORT has carried out a series of gybes to get around the countless islands in the South of China Sea and is due to cross the Equator once again later today. This will mark the symbolic entry into the Southern Hemisphere and will coincide with the wind dropping right off for the giant trimaran. The way through to the Indian Ocean via the Sunda Strait will require a lot of patience and concentration.
In the next few hours, the situation will change drastically in this race. After averaging more than 27 knots out on the water in the first 1300 miles, later today, they will find conditions that are increasingly calm. "Now, we only have sixteen knots of wind," said Joyon. "We are approaching the Natuna Regency in the hope of benefiting from a bit more wind. The seas have calmed down somewhat and there is not as much shipping around. We deliberately avoided the Vietnamese peninsula to get way from all the fishing boats. But as we approach Malaysia, we will once again encounter lots of cargo vessels and all sorts of shipping."
Nimble, cool and perfectly formed - Excess Catamarans
Good taste, first class naval architecture and excellent construction combined with the resources of the world's biggest boatbuilder... the results were always going to be hard to beat
Most cruising catamarans are stodgy to sail, but Bénéteau's new Excess brand aims to bring back the fun. Excess cats are lighter and faster, more nimble and powerful, with a sail area : displacement ratio 10 per cent higher. How much difference does 10 per cent make? We sailed the first two models in Mallorca to find out.
First impressions
Walking along a dock towards an Excess cat, the first thing you'll notice is the exceptionally tall mast. The Excess 12 has a bridge clearance of 18.3m (59ft 11in), while the Excess 15's masthead is 27.9m (91ft 6in) above the waterline. And that's just the standard rig. The sportier Pulse Line rig adds another metre or two.

European Yacht of the Year 2020
Every year, around 60 new sailing boats are launched on the European market. But only five shipyards can celebrate the title "European Yacht of the Year 2020". The tests took the jury members of the twelve sailing magazines from all over Europe to Port Ginesta, south of Barcelona, in October. All 16 candidates were thoroughly tested and evaluated. In total, the specialised journalists covered almost 2,500 nautical miles with the nominated yachts.
The respective yacht of the year reflects what's happening on the market in general. On the one hand, the latest trend is going towards increasingly larger yachts with customised interiors and numerous extras, and on the other, sport yachts are enjoying a surge not seen in a long time. Quite remarkable is the overwhelming dominance of French candidates. Since 2004, French boatbuilders have earned the title of "European Yacht of the Year" 31 times. For comparison: Germany and Italy, the second and third most successful countries, won only 16 titles between them in the same time.
The winners were announced at BOOT Dusseldorf:
Winners Family Cruiser & Performance Cruiser
Beneteau Oceanis 30.1
X-Yachts X4.0
Winner Innovation Award
ClubSwan 36
Winners Luxury Cruiser & Regatta Yachts

ALUBAT OVNI 400
The OVNI 400 is part of a new generation of boats, which is in line with the OVNI 450 and combines innovation, elegance and ergonomics. With the OVNI 400, safety at sea goes hand in hand with performance and comfort. A hull with a strong and narrow stem that gives the boat a great length at the waterline, a square-top mainsail, a lifting keel of more than 1 tonne that allows great rigidity when sailing, and a shallow draught for easy mooring anywhere.
----------------------------------------------
Amel 60
The Amel 60 is fully suitable for single-handed use and offers maximum comfort. It has a very high safety factor and is virtually unsinkable due to several watertight collision bulkheads. In its completely covered cockpit there is a protected steering position from which the Amel can be kept on course even in heavy weather. The large engine room is centrally accessible. Of course there is also enough storage space below deck.

Astus 22.5
Following the great success of the Astus 16.5 and Astus 20.5, Astus is expanding its product range, designed by VPLP Design, with the introduction of a new model, the Astus 22.5, which will replace the Astus 22.1 at the end of 2020.
True to the successful concept of the Astus trimarans, the Astus 22.5 will also have excellent transportability. This will allow you to explore many different areas that might have been inaccessible with a larger boat.
Another new feature of the Astus 22.5 is the option to mount foils (sold separately), which is now possible for the first time on the Astus trimarans. Foils give the boat more buoyancy, allowing it to glide even at lower speeds.
----------------------------------------------
Bavaria C42
The Bavaria C42 is the logical progression of the Bavaria C-Line, with its own character. A modern innovative hull shape with chines and a V-bow developed by BAVARIA YACHTS guarantee best sailing characteristics and an unusually large amount of space below deck.
More stability, a longer waterline and therefore more performance as well as a more direct feeling when steering, thanks to the chines. The prominent angle at the stern has another advantage: the aft cabins offer more space and therefore more comfort. Narrow at the waterline, the V-bow widens towards the deck, like a V. Additional volume in the bow ensures less trim when heeling and thus more safety in rough seas.
----------------------------------------------
Dehler 30 OD
As one of the world market leaders for performance cruisers, DEHLER begins a new chapter in its over 50-year history - the Dehler 30 od. In the tradition of Sprinta Sport and DB1, DEHLER presents a new offshore design class focusing on two-hand long distance racing.
An optimized hull design, equipment and sails developed by the world-renowned judel / vrolijk & co designers allow maximum speeds and safe navigation at wind speeds from 4 to 40 knots. The concept stands for highest safety of the crew according to the CE-directives category A - without regard to a handicap system.
----------------------------------------------
Dragonfly 40
Both the Touring and ultimate versions have a carbon mast and a batten traveller system for easy and safe control of the fully battened mainsail. Code-0 and gennaker are optionally available.
All cabins have plenty of light from the cabin sides and the hull windows, the 6 skylights on the roof of the main cabin provide optimal lighting and ventilation throughout the boat. The two large trampolines offer plenty of space on the deck, ideal for relaxing and sunbathing. The floats each contain 2 deck hatches and offer ample storage space for bicycles, kayaks, extra sails, SuPs, inflatable boats, etc.
----------------------------------------------
Excess 15
Thanks to its sporty rigging with a super advantageous aspect ratio and the optional Pulse Line Rigg - which offers more than 10% of the sail area / displacement ratio - thrills are guaranteed. Manoeuvring is simplified by titanium-style aluminium struts and cleats and Dyneema steering cables to improve the responsiveness and sensitivity of the rudder feel.
From one helm position to the other, the Excess 15 offers an ideal view of the sails, the sea and the bows. This double steering position is also a guarantee of comfort and efficiency. The steering is direct, you are connected to the boat and the sail trim is right there, within reach of your fingertips.
----------------------------------------------
Hallberg-Rassy 40C
When the Hallberg-Rassy 44 was introduced, it was a bold step forward in terms of both interior comfort, sailing performance and looks. The new 40C is equivalent when it comes to saloon, aft cabin and galley. Combined with a cockpit that has exactly the same measurements as on the 44.
There are two generous galley layouts to choose from: the larger version has a larger work surface and more storage space, and there is also room for an extra refrigerator. You can also accommodate a microwave and dishwasher. If you choose the other option, you get more storage space in the cockpit locker.
----------------------------------------------
Sailart 18
The new SAILART 18 is a performance-oriented daysailer, which is suitable as a one-handed daysailer as well as an uncompromising regatta boat for small crews, due to the different versions.
The fitting configuration is designed for one-handed operation, but sporty sailing in a crew of two is the most common and optimal crew size. The low weight and the large sail area are key prerequisites for good sailing performance.
Featured Brokerage
YYACHTS Y7. Tripp Design. POA EUR.
The Y7 was created in collaboration with US designer Bill Tripp, considered one of the world's best naval architects. Our goal was to combine comfortable sailing performance with competitive sailing performance, even on the regatta course.
In conditions where other yachts still use their engines, the sails are already set on the Y7. A displacement of only 29 tons and almost 300 square meters of sail area at wind make move the yacht even in light winds; Y7 owners don't have to worry about the perfect weather all the time.
All halyards, sheets and stretchers run hidden to the steering columns - so the helmsman can operate the Y7 alone at any time. This is not a matter of course for a 70-foot yacht and allows the owner to sail with a very small crew or even on his own.
