3rd RS Aero World Championship
Black Rock YC, Melbourne, Australia: After a cracking day with four races yesterday the forecast for today proved correct with the southerly wind smashing in at lunchtime curtailed play.

The fleet launched on schedule to the increasing wind but by start time 33kns of wind was recorded on the Committee boat and with it still increasing the race officer sent the fleet back ashore. They fleet enjoyed getting on the water though and every one returned jubilant for having had a blast out in the Port Phillip Bay waves in the fresh breeze.

After waiting ashore for an hour to see if a break in the weather may occur the RO called off any further racing for the day as gusts exceeded 40kn. So the results from the end of Day 4 stood and with 11 races completed and great championship was concluded over a variety of conditions.

Slow start for sailors at 2020 Australian 29er Nationals at Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron
Sailors in the 2020 Australian 29er Nationals have had a slower than expected start to their regattas after strong southerly winds forced the race committee to abandon the first day of racing yesterday.

The event was scheduled to have five straight days of sailing without any lay days, which means the race committee will now be working hard to put the event back on track with a solid day of racing today.

The host club, Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron, has pulled out all the stops to set up a great event and while the weather gods didn't play the game on the opening day, the forecast for the rest of the event is looking good.

The event also gave sailors from around the country a closer look into the effects of the bushfires currently ravaging across eastern Victoria and southern New South Wales, with smoke haze blanketing the event during the registration day.

Amanda said the fires that were effecting the club's close neighbours in Gippsland in eastern Victoria made it "a really emotional time to be holding an event".

"Contributing factors to a regatta that normally wouldn't be on the run sheet are now having to be talked about in the planning stages," she said.

"For us to be down here and hosting a regatta while so many people around the country are struggling is challenging, but there are small things we can do."

She said the club was gathering donations at the event that would help go towards those that had been affected.

With four days of racing now left for the event, sailors are eager to get on the water today and get a few races on the board. -- Harry Fisher

Wight Vodka Best Sailors Bar
Wight Vodka Best Sailors Bar While we don't have any nominees this year from Cuba, every yachtie bar in the world has been influenced by iconic cuban drinks: the daiquiri, Cuba Libre, presidente.

But the mojito is perhaps the most iconic. Today it's made with white rum, club soda, sugar, lime and muddled mint, but the drink traces its origins to 16th-century Havana. And, like most drinks, its history is murky.

One legend traces its origin to the cocktail El Draque, named after explorer Sir Frances Drake, who possibly carried the key ingredients of mint and lime on his ship. Another legend theorizes that slaves who worked in sugar cane fields would doctor unrefined rum with sugar cane juice, lime and mint.

Either way, this combination eventually made its way into bars, gaining popularity during Prohibition among the likes of Ernest Hemingway.

10 fresh mint leaves
1/2 lime, cut into 4 wedges
2 tablespoons white sugar, or to taste
1 cup ice cubes
1 1/2 fluid ounces white rum
1/2 cup club soda

Place mint leaves and 1 lime wedge into a sturdy glass. Use a muddler to crush the mint and lime to release the mint oils and lime juice. Add 2 more lime wedges and the sugar, and muddle again to release the lime juice. Do not strain the mixture. Fill the glass almost to the top with ice. Pour the rum over the ice, and fill the glass with carbonated water. Stir, taste, and add more sugar if desired. Garnish with the remaining lime wedge.

While you're enjoying your Cuban getaway from northern hemisphere sleet storms... visit us and vote for the winner from our top ten list. Voting continues for one more week. The winning bar will receive a custom made 3D map from Latitude Kinsale.

Zen crowned King of the Derwent
The NSW yacht Zen has been crowned overall winner of this years Harcourt Hobart King of the Derwent. The TP52, owned and skippered by Gordon Ketelbey, sailed a perfect tactical race to finish third over the line and win IRC on handicap.

Zen has recently been acquired by Ketelbey after racing on the TP52 Super Series for many years and has undergone modifications to make sure it is up to the challenge of offshore racing.

Today's conditions, of a 15-20 knot sea breeze on the River Derwent, saw Phillip Turner's yacht Alive take line honours to claim the Derwent Sailing Squadron, City of Hobart Trophy. Purchased at the start of 2014 by Turner, a Tasmanian businessman, Alive has broken several long-standing race records and filled the trophy cabinet from east coast Australia races before heading to Southeast Asia mid 2016 for the Asian Series.

Greg Prescott's, modified Farr 40 2Unlimited won AMS division and was fourth in IRC. Prescott will now be concentrating on tomorrow's Australian Yachting Championships commencing in Hobart.

This years PHS was won by NSW yacht Veteran yacht Katwinchar. Bill Barry-Cotter's Katwinchar was the oldest boat in 75th Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race fleet at 114 years of age, but also the oldest to have ever competed in the race. Built in 1904 by coopers at the Watney Brewery in London, Katwinchar won the Grand Veterans class. Katwinchar will also be competing in the Australian Yachting Championships. -- Colleen Darcey

Defenders snatch opening race of 5.5 Metre Scandinavian Gold Cup in Pittwater
Artemis XIV (NOR 57, Kristian Nergaard, Johan Barne, Anders Pedersen) opened their defence of the 5.5 Metre Scandinavian Gold Cup with a last minute win in the first race sailed on Saturday in Newport, Australia, overtaking Beta Crucis (AUS 63, Martin Cross, Bob Stoddard, Martin Bunch) in the final stages.

The forecast predicted some spectacular conditions with 37 degrees and 20-25 knots from the north-west - an onshore breeze in the Palma Beach Circle. It is a long way from the host club, the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, but was worth every mile with an amazing race in perfect conditions. However it soon turned into a race of attrition with only three of the six boats finishing and most suffering some damage during the day.

The Scandinavian Gold Cup continues Sunday with two races scheduled. The forecast is for 20 knots from the south. The fleet will also be joined on the water by the rest of the 5.5 Metre here in Pittwater as they race for the Class Cups for Classics, Evolutions and Moderns. -- Robert Deaves

Australian Yachting Championships 2020: Winners decided
Click on image for photo gallery.

Australian Yachting Championship Matt Allen has claimed a third successive Australian Yachting Championship title today in Hobart, with Ichi Ban claiming victory in four races and finishing third in Race 5, with Race 6 abandoned for Division A.

Hosted by the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania over three days, Allen, who won Division A with his TP52 from another TP52, Zen (Gordon Ketelbey) and the RP66, Alive (Phillip Turner), arrived at the Championships having won the 2019 Rolex Sydney Hobart.

"Our aim for the last six months was the Sydney Hobart, Blue Water Pointscore and this event," he said, having won all three. "It was also nice to be part of the winning Southern Cross Cup team (sailed in conjunction with the 2019 Rolex Sydney Hobart) with Gweilo (Matt Donald/Chris Townsend's TP52) and St Jude (Noel Cornish's Sydney 47) too."

"We couldn't be happier. To defend the Championships successfully is a real thrill. It was the best fleet in some years. And to sail in the challenging conditions on the Derwent, you had to be on your game all the time. It was great to see support by Sydney Hobart boats and the locals."

In Division B, two Farr 40's fought throughout for the overall win. The local favourite, Greg Prescott with 2 Unlimited, and Western Australia's Enterprise, owned by Anthony Kirke, stayed within three points of each other throughout. Keiran Mulcahy's Soozal (NSW) was always in the mix too.

Following today's two races, 2 Unlimited prevailed by two points with a drop in place. So close were the two, they finished equal second in Race 5, and then Enterprise won the final race from 2 Unlimited. Soozal came in third overall, two and a half points behind Enterprise.

A similar situation occurred in Division C, between John Warlow's Beneteau First 40.7, Ocean Crusaders (Qld) and the local boat, Drew Nathan's MDB Whistler, which finished one and a half points apart in first and second place respectively.

The Queenslanders prevailed over Whistler, with another Tasmanian boat, Shaun Tiedemann's Sydney 36 C/R, Philosopher (Tas), rounding out the top three with a drop in place. -- Di Pearson

Royal Cork Yacht Club is Mitsubishi Motors 'Sailing Club of the Year 2020'
The Royal Cork Yacht Club is the new Mitsubishi Motors Sailing Club of the Year, both in honour of its Tricentenary in 2020, and in celebration of a busy and successful season in 2019. The hospitable club faces this unprecedented new year with an inspiring serenity, strengthened in awareness of experience gained and achievements attained in the many years of its existence and supported by the global sailing community in its outstanding world status.

Yet even as the special events for the season of 2020 were being planned during 2019 and earlier, 2019 itself has seen some notable sailing achievements by Royal Cork members of all age groups, both at home and abroad. But when a club is operating in the unique timeframe which is the story of the Royal Cork Yacht Club, perhaps we should think in terms of measurable decades of successful club activity to get a more accurate picture of RCYC life afloat and ashore.

when Mitsubishi Motors Ireland took over what is now the longest-running sponsorship in Irish sailing - the competition was extended to all Ireland, and the Royal Cork became pace-setters, a benchmark of multiple sailing and sports social activities against which other clubs are inevitably measured. -- WM Nixon in Afloat
