Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron Takes the 2019 Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup Down Under
Newport, R.I. USA: It all came down to the final race, as it should. Two teams of accomplished and motivated amateur sailors from opposite corners of the globe battling on a lumpy, windy Narragansett Bay for one of Corinthian sailing's most-prized trophies, the 2019 Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup.

Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron and San Diego Yacht Club started the 12th and final race separated by six points, which was anything but a safe margin in this competitive 20-boat fleet. The Australian team had the edge in the overall standings, but skipper Guido Belgiorno-Nettis and his team put the regatta title right in play with a sub-par start while San Diego bolted to the head of the fleet and was, for a while, back in the virtual regatta lead.

Using the superior boatspeed and sterling tactical that had gotten them out of trouble all regatta, Royal Sydney ground back into the top 10 and then into the top five, leaving San Diego hoping for a miracle that wouldn't come. The RSYS team was simply too polished. After 12 races in a full range of conditions, they sailed through the final finish line in fourth place to become the first Southern Hemisphere club to win the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup.

Final standings:
1. Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, AUS, 55

Felipe Silva wins Finn European Masters
After a week of great sailing conditions for the 65 sailors from 15 nations, Saturday was always forecast to be the lightest and trickiest day of the championship and so it turned out to be.

The race officials worked tirelessly to reset the course and move marks to each new wind direction, but it took more than two hours waiting to get Race 7 away and the first attempt at that was abandoned half way up the first leg after a huge wind shift.

The next attempt got away first time with Felix Denikaev leading the fleet around the top mark from Antal Székely from Hungary and Lawrence Crispin, from Britain. Székely led at the gate but Budzien was catching up fast. Coming into the final mark he passed Székely and then attacked Gebhardt Zdenek, from Czech Republic just before the final mark. Zdenek fouled and after doing turns, Budizen led down to the finish line to win from Székely with Maksym Krukovskyi, from Ukraine, crossing in third.

After a further wait, Race 8 was started but the wind really wasn't cooperating and shortly after the top mark, the race was abandoned and fleet sent back to the club. The championship was over. -- Robert Deaves

Yachting traditions triumph at 14th Monaco Classic Week
Monaco Classic Week Monaco Classic Week ended in style yesterday in a meeting that is as much about etiquette, parties and socialising as it is about competition. A glorious sumptuous celebration of yachting heritage, which this year put the focus on America, with members from the Manhattan Yacht Club and Nantucket Yacht Club crossing the Atlantic to join the festivities and race.

More than 100 classic yachts, including seven big schooners plus 20 Riva and Chris Craft motorboats descended on Monaco for the week, 800 sailors in total from 26 countries. The big winner of the Monaco Classic Week Trophy was the majestic John Alden schooner Puritan (1930), which succeeds Viola, the 1908 Fife design which won the 2017 edition.

The miraculous Swedish gaff cutter Ester won the La Belle Classe Restoration prize. This plucky pretty boat, built in 1901 to win the Tivoli Cup, spent 75 years 52m down on the seabed after a fire, before the wreck was located by sonar in 2012 and the boat raised to undergo a meticulous restoration.

It was an Italian affair in the International 12-foot Dinghy Class, with Aldo Samele on his Canarino Feroce the winner ahead of compatriots Vito Moschioni (Claudia) and Federico Pilo Pais (Blu Amnesia). In the vintage gaff group the main rivalry was between the Burgess design Chips (1913) and the Fife cutter Viola (1908), a duel won by Chips, with Viola in 2nd and Oriole in 3rd.

In the vintage Marconi, Cippino II belonging to Daniel Sieleki, Vice Commodore at the Yacht Club Punta del Este, Uruguay, emerged the winner, with the two Olin Stephens designs, Skylark of 1937 and Blitzen (1938), completing the podium.

Out of 18 entrants in the classic Marconi fleet, Meerblick Fun (1957) took 1st place ahead of Resolute Salmon (1975) and Encounter (Frers 1976). Elena of London reigned supreme in the spectacular group of Big Boats, ahead of the Mylne-design Naema and gaff cutter Moonbeam of Fife to win the Magnum Trophy. Also putting on a show were the Metric Classes, with Mecara in the 6M, Mirabella in the 8M and the 15M IR Mariska winning in their respective classes.

Next edition: 15-19 September 2021.

Graham Vials and Chris Turner are the 2019 Flying Fifteen World Champions
Graham Vials and Chris Turner of Derwent Reservoir SC sealed world title number four in a fitting way by doing a horizon job on the fleet on the final day of the Sub-aru Flying Fifteen World Championship at Dun Laoghaire. The breeze was so light they literally had to drift across the finish line in a shortened 2 lap wind-ward/leeward course.

The 72 boat fleet headed out for one final race in hazy sunshine and a light breeze that was always predicted to drop by lunchtime. Despite a few nervous last minute shifts racing got underway shortly after 1100 hrs in a very light 5 - 7 knot North Westerly.

The breeze ebbed and flowed in patches providing a real test of nerves for sailors trying to decide which side of the course to choose. As is now customary, Graham Vials and Chris Turner just coasted up the middle of the course playing the shifts to perfection.

At one point it looked like the extended time limit of 30 minutes might cancel out a vast majority of the fleet but in the scramble to get across the finish line Justin Waples / Jackie McKellar drifted across to finish second. Third place was decided on the line when John Hassen and Kevin Griffiths of South of Perth YC had to give way to fellow Australians Chris Vila and Mark Holmes on the line. Fifth boat to cross was another Australian crew Mike Hart and Dean McAullay (RFBYC).

A number of the overall regatta leaders trailed in quite deep, Andy Mckee and Richard Jones (Dovestone SC) finished in 18th to claim second place overall and Richard Lovering and Matt Alvarado (Hayling Is SC) 12th to settle for third overall.

Australia's Mike Hart and Dean McAullay finished 4th overall splitting up the dominance of the British fleet. South Africans Campbell Alexander and Dave Herridge finished the last race in 9th to claim 15th overall, a good effort in this highly com-petitive fleet. Andy and Rory Martin became top Irish boat in 17th just ahead of the New Zealand crew, Hayden Percy and Scott Pedersen.

STIR is the most user-friendly sailing event in the Caribbean.

Register in CSA (Caribbean Sailing Association); IRC; Multihull; CSA Bareboat; Beach Cat or One Design classes with a minimum length of 20 feet.

Nightly parties, live music, food and drink. World-class racing, the chance to trade tacks with America's Cup, Volvo Ocean and Olympic crews on the water and off is what earns STIR its motto, 'We Love It Here' You will too.

A First Flight And A Name: Defiant
After an estimated 76,000 combined hours of fabrication and finishing work by the production and shore teams of American Magic, the U.S. Challenger's first AC75 racing boat was officially named and launched on Saturday morning. Named Defiant, the cutting-edge foiling monohull is the first America's Cup class boat built to represent the New York Yacht Club in over 16 years. The boat underwent initial testing on Narragansett Bay earlier in the week.

Defiant was constructed at a dedicated facility in Bristol, Rhode Island, the site of America's Cup boatbuilding efforts since the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company's first Cup defender, Vigilant, was launched in 1893. American Magic will continue to train in Rhode Island waters during the fall of 2019 before relocating to Pensacola, Florida for the winter.

WHAT The YJA MS Amlin Yachtsman of the Year and the YJA MS Amlin Young Sailor of the Year Awards were presented during a Gala Dinner at the Grand Café Southampton on September 13, following on from Press Day at the Southampton International Boat Show. The event drew together the great and the good of the marine world, distinguished guests and many previous winners of the awards.

The YJA MS Amlin Young Sailor of the Year 2019 is Matilda Nicholls, winner of the Women's Laser Radial Youth World Championship at Kingston, Canada.

The MS Amlin Seamanship Award, presented by 2018 winner Sean Rose. The trophy, previously awarded for acts of seamanship in the Round the Island Race, has been extended worldwide in 2019, this year being presented to Roy Disney, the owner of Pyewacket who rescued the team on John Sangmeister's Santa Cruz 70 OEX during July's Transpac 50 Race after they were forced to abandon ship due to water ingress from damage to their rudder post.

Next up was the YJA MS Amlin Young Blogger of the Year Award which was presented to Alex Rabbitt, who produced a fabulous short video story, filmed over a year, which is about the experience a group of youngsters went through in passing their sailing instructor course in Manchester, called 'Journey to Instructor'.

Conrad invited Nikki to the stage to present the award to Lucy MacGregor - four-time winner of the Women's Match Racing World Championship after her victory at the Lysekil Women's Match in August. Clipper Race Portimao to Punta del Este
The first big test of the 40,000 nautical mile Clipper Round the World Yacht Race awaits, with around 220 everyday people setting sail from Portimao, Portugal, to race across the Atlantic Ocean to Punta del Este in Uruguay.

The race across the Atlantic is the first of six ocean crossings that form part of the eleven month Clipper 2019-20 Round the World Race, which began in London on September 1. The Clipper Race is unique in that it trains everyday people to sail around the world. And 40 percent of participants had no sailing experience before signing up for the four weeks of intensive Clipper Race training, and the crew hail from 43 different countries and all walks of life.

The race to Punta del Este is the second on the circumnavigation, with the teams on board the eleven 70 foot yachts already having raced 1,200 nautical miles from London to Portimao. This race will see the crew battle the unpredictable conditions and heat of the Doldrums as they cross the Equator and then pick up the easterly trade winds on the way to South America.

This is the second time the Clipper Race has visited Punta del Este, with the fleet due to arrive between Saturday 12 and Wednesday 16 October.

The Clipper Race Fleet will enjoy 12 days in Punta del Este before taking on the second ocean crossing - the South Atlantic - to Cape Town. From Cape Town, the teams will experience the Roaring Forties in the Southern Ocean as they race across to Fremantle, Western Australia; around to the Whitsundays in East Australia, back into the Northern Hemisphere to China where teams will race to Qingdao, via Sanya and Zhuhai; across the mighty North Pacific to Seattle; to New York, via the famous Panama Canal; and then it's a final Atlantic crossing; with stops in Bermuda and Derry-Londonderry before arriving back to London as fully proven ocean racers.
