French On Top In Korea

Korea Cup Gyeonggi-do, South Korea: Pierre-Antoine Morvan's Vannes Agglo Sailing Team took the top of the leaderboard with four wins from five matches on day one of the Korea Match Cup. However the only team to keep a clean sheet thus far was the reigning champion of the Alpari World Match Racing Tour, Ian Williams' GAC Pindar, who scored three wins from three.

Staying out of trouble on the tight race course proved difficult, as Team Alpari FX found out to its cost. Adam Minoprio was leading Pierre-Antoine Morvan until the Kiwi got stuck in traffic as he caught up the race in front. Morvan saw the New Zealanders choking on bad air and sailed around the road block to take the lead and the race win.

The other French team, GEFCO Match Racing Team, will be unpopular with the repair crew after T-boning local Korean crew, Busan Match Team skippered by Gunwoo Park. A penalty down, and with their broken bow kicking up a nasty wash, the race was all but over for Mathieu Richard. But things all changed when the Koreans trawled their gennaker in the hoist, and the wounded French boat sailed past for an unexpected victory.

This is the only one of the six events on the Alpari World Match Racing Tour where the boats are fitted with asymmetric gennakers as opposed to conventional spinnakers. The lack of familiarity with gennakers showed today, with numerous handling errors such as the Korean trawl, and a nasty hourglass twist for Taylor Canfield's USone team, who gave up a three-length lead to be overtaken by Phil Robertson and WAKA Racing.

Racing continues tomorrow, with the prospect of sunshine and warm winds offering a welcome alternative to today's cool and chilly conditions.

Rambler Smashes Block Island Race Record
Larchmont, New York, USA: In sports, it's one thing to break a record. It's quite another to break it when you are the record holder. At the Storm Trysail Club's 68th annual Block Island Race, which started on the Friday afternoon of Memorial Day weekend, George David's (Hartford, Conn.) 90' Rambler finished the 186 nautical mile course in 13 hours, 15 minutes and 55 seconds, shaving two hours, 27 minutes and 10 seconds off Rambler 100's record-breaking time (also turned in by George David) in the 2011 race.

Tactician Peter Isler called it "unbelievable" given that Rambler 100 was 10 feet longer and 20% faster than Rambler the 90 footer, which was built in 2002 and has been owned and raced by David since 2006. Those variables quickly became irrelevant, however, when strong, steady winds from the northwest obliged the fleet of 62 boats in nine classes (six IRC, two PHRF and one J/109) to engage in a fast reach to Block Island and back from the start/finish line in Stamford, Conn., where host Stamford Yacht Club is located.

Rambler jibed at Block Island to reverse her course but didn't make a single tack until the final approach to the finish line, according to Isler, who calculated that Rambler averaged 14 knots of boat speed throughout the race. "We saw 26 knots at the top end for wind, and the boat hit 20 knots a couple times," he said. "We were back in Long Island Sound by midnight." (Rambler's class started at 3:30.)

Rambler's time also was improved by the navigational choice of exiting and entering the Sound through "the Sluice," a narrow passage rarely used as an alternative to Plum Gut and The Race, two current-ridden passages notorious for making or breaking a team's performance in the Block Island Race.

The Block Island Race was first held in 1946 and is a qualifier for the North Ocean Racing Trophy (IRC), the Double Handed Ocean Racing Trophy (IRC), the New England Lighthouse Series (PHRF), and the Gulf Stream Series (IRC). The Block Island Race is also a qualifier for the Caper, Sagola, and Windigo trophies awarded by the YRA of Long Island Sound and the 'Tuna" Trophy for the best combined IRC scores in the Edlu (40%) and the Block Island Race (60%).

Consequently, the challenge is to balance between exposure to healthful and harmful radiation. To prevent skin harm and skin cancer it is indispensable to protect the skin with sun cream and adequate clothing. Particularly on the water UV protective clothing is crucial since the water reflects the solar radiation and increases the impact on the skin.

Marinepool protective clothing is made from technical fibres with special construction. Marinepool carefully pays attention to test and produce the clothing according to the European standard EN13758-1 to ensure adequate quality characteristics of the utilized materials.

- fold-up collars add protection to the neck from sun radiation
- dull yarns absorb sunlight better than glossy yarns and are thus more protective

Bodacious Dream Wins The 2013 Atlantic Cup
#118 Bodacious Dream (USA), skippered by Dave Rearick and Matt Scharl, held on to first place overall in the 2013 Atlantic Cup presented by 11th Hour Racing after a tight weekend of inshore racing that saw Bodacious Dream and #121 Lecoq Cuisine trading places.

The weather over both days delivered wind speeds consistently in the upper teens and twenties with gusts up to 30 knots, making for a challenging two days of inshore racing in Narragansett Bay. #116 Icarus dominated the inshore series by winning three of the five races, finishing second in the other two, en route to securing third overall.

Bodacious Dream was equally impressive during the offshore competition, besting the field during the first offshore leg (Charleston, S.C. to N.Y. Harbor), and second leg (N.Y. Harbor to Newport, RI). Bodacious Dream finished with 51 total combined points for the offshore legs and inshore races in Narragansett Bay, Lecoq Cuisine finished with 45 total points. With the victory Bodacious Dream claim $5,500 of the $15,000 purse, one of the largest in sailing in the United States.

Ken Read, North Sails President and Former Volvo Ocean Race Skipper for Puma Ocean Racing, who sailed on board Icaurs Racing today said,"These guys sailed this boat very, very well, so it's pretty easy just to go along for the ride. It was good fun and this is what sailboat racing is supposed to be all about. These race courses were fantastic...but it's just fun to sail with a bunch of young guys who are really into the sport and just go rip around the race course, it doesn't get any better than [The Atlantic Cup]."

North Sea Week

North Sea Week On Saturday, 25.5. 2013, around 16:55 the Swan 441 "Charisma" crossed the finish line at Edinburgh as the last yacht of the North Sea Week. Gale-force winds and the cold have forced most participants to retire. Skipper Claviez decided wisely to escape the predicted gale-force winds and did choose a safer but longer way further north.

The North Sea Week 2013 was dominated by extreme weather conditions. With calm air, fog, gale-force winds and even some sun, the weather proved to be a huge challenge for participants and organisers. Five out of 13 races had to be abandoned or cancelled. Due to the long cold period until April, the North Sea is still very cold. With water temperatures of 6 degrees there is a bigger chance of fog. The wind, which is still pretty warm on land, cools off on the water, relative humidity rises and fog appears.

With 151 registered yachts for this year's event, the registration numbers for the North Sea Week are rising again.

With the race courses to and and around Helgoland, the North Sea Week offers a special challenge. The ultimate finish are the races at the end of the North Sea Week, alternating between Edinburgh and Kiel as the finish, while the race to Kiel takes the route around Skagen. Apart from the most challenging yacht races in Germany - the North Sea Week also offers an attractive onshore program, which encourages visitors to come to the "Red Rock in the North Sea" for the Whit-sun weekend. -- Hans Genthe

'Corinthian Spirit' At The Heart Of The ARC
The crew of Ostrea receiving the ‘Spirit of the ARC’ Award. Click on image to enlarge.

ARC The Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC) annually welcomes sailors from around the world to gather in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria for a rally hallmarked by safe and social cruising. Rallies are about crossing oceans with friends, both new and old, and everybody celebrating the great achievement of completing an ocean passage. At its heart this is a fun competition, not a race, with prizes awarded for good seamanship, great sailing, and joining in the unique spirit of the ARC.

Since creation in 1986, the ARC has embraced the amateur, Corinthian spirit. Most boats sail in the Cruising Division, which allows engines to be used for propulsion and attracts families, cruising couples and groups of friends, to enjoy a safe and supported Atlantic crossing.

At the Prize Giving, awards are given for a wide range of achievements, not just for sailing performance. The biggest cheers are always given for crews receiving the Spirit of the ARC award, which in 2012 was presented to Ostrea who, with a doctor aboard, diverted to perform impromptu surgery on a stricken crew member on Johanem.

EUROSAF Youth Sailing European Championships
Entries opened recently for the 2nd EUROSAF Youth Sailing, European Championships, being held in Tavira, Portugal from 3rd to 9th August. This event is the European Championship for sailors under the age of 19 (on 31st December), and incorporates the same disciplines and equipment as used for the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships.

The first event in this series was held in Aarhus, Denmark, in August 2012 and attracted sailors from 17 different European countries. Feedback from the sailors and coaches was very encouraging, particularly from a first event of its kind. For many competitors it was their first experience of a multi-discipline regatta, one which will stand them in good stead in years to come as their sailing careers develop.

Entries remain open until June 15th. Each European Member National Authority (MNA) is permitted to enter two crews in each discipline. An MNA may apply for additional entries in one or more disciplines using the defined 'wild card' scheme. These additional places will be assigned by the Organising Authority, in association with EUROSAF, on a "first come first served" basis. Successful applicants will be notified as soon as possible after 15th June.

With more boats in the water, more tents on land and new program offerings, organisers were rightfully optimistic about the prospects of the Hanseboot ancora boat show in Neustadt, Germany, but almost continuous rain after a sunny start kept the visitors away. The show, which ended on Sunday after three days saw a 30% drop in visitors.

Located in the bay of L übeck on the Baltic Sea the event claims to be the biggest german inwater boat show. With 147 boats (up 2% compared to last year) in water and on land as well as in more than 70 pagoda tents around the harbor (10 more than 2012) the organizers stated that about 12,000 visitors attended this year's free event.

The hanseboot ancora boat show is the inwater event of the Hamburg trade fair company Hamburg Messe und Congress. Their main boat show, the hanseboot Hamburg in late october, has faced structural and management problems in recent years.

The next hanseboot ancora boat show will be held from May 23-25, 2014.

The Wally Cento Hamilton by Bremerhaven design office judel/vrolijk & co has won the Neptune Special Award at the Boat International Magazine World Superyacht Awards 2013. At a ceremony in the Turkish port of Istanbul the 30.48 metre (100 foot) maxi sailing yacht was honoured by an international jury for her outstanding performance. judel/vrolijk, as a member of the working group DEUTSCHE YACHTEN – Superyachts Germany, designed the world's first yacht to be built in accordance with the new Wally Cento box rule prescribing narrow specifications as the basis for a Wally racing class.

"The idea behind the Wally Cento formula is for 100-foot yachts which are more or less the same and which pursue two aims. They are intended to be used for cruising but also as racing yachts. They should however come out of this compromise with the highest possible performance potential", explains renowned yacht designer Rolf Vrolijk from the design office. Hamilton was commissioned by British businessman Charles Dunstone and built in 15 months at Green Marine in England. She was launched in 2012.
