Cammas wins GC32 Villasimius Cup
Light winds on the GC32 Villasimius Cup's final day may not have provided the same top speed foiling action of the previous three days, but there was high drama across the leaderboard during today's three races with first place changing twice and third place swapping. Out on the bay off Marina di Villasimius, the 5-7 knot wind started off in the east-southeast before veering south-southeast for the last two races made for particularly tricky racing.

Franck Cammas' NORAUTO powered by Team France started today with a four point lead over Realteam, but this advantage evaporated when they finished sixth in the first race, as their Swiss lake racing specialist opponents won, reading the conditions with uncanny precision.

NORAUTO recovered a point in the next race, finishing second, leaving the two teams tied going into the final race.

Cammas did his utmost to keep his GC32's transoms pointed at Swiss bows, as his crew did 'the wild thing' - hiking to leeward. He finished in front, NORAUTO claiming its third GC32 Racing Tour event win of the 2018 season.

The GC32 Racing Tour resumes with the GC32 TPM Med Cup in Toulon, France over 10-14th October.

European Match Race Tour 2018 Grand Final Tivat
Polish skipper Piotr Harasimovics and his HRM Racing Team dominated the final stages of the European Tour 2018 Grand Final in Montenegro's Tivat. With a clear 3-0, he overtook the winner of the Round Robin, Sylvain Escurat from France, while Croatia's young guns with skipper Marko Smolic defeated Austria's Helmut Czasny to secure the bronze medal. The Polish victory also put Harasimovics ahead of Slovenia's Dejan Presen to crown the Pole the 2018 European Tour Champion.

The 2018 Grand Final took place in the historic bay of Kotor just in front of recently built Porto Montenegro's superyacht harbor. Tivat, nestled in the famous bay - a UNESCO world heritage site - like a natural amphitheater proved to be the perfect choice with excellent sailing conditions on the water, the spectacular backdrop of Montenegro's famous mountain, the Lovcen, and a high quality organization provided by Porto Montenegro Yacht club.

Right from the beginning the French representative Escurat took the lead to secure the win of the qualifying round. It was only until the last day that Piotr Harasimovics, world #21, showed an brilliant display and to ensure Poland's first ever victory of the European Match Race Tour.

The 2019 European Match Race Tour will feature again seven events in seven different countries all over Europe with the Grand Final hosted in Sibenik, Croatia, in October 2019. -- Helmut Czasny-Bonomo

Doyle One Design: Bespoke
WHAT And in all sizes… At the same time as making ever bigger inroads into the sharp end of the superyacht and grand prix fleets, Doyle One Design continue to knock it out the park in classes like the J/70 and Etchells

Rolex Yachtsman of the Year 2017 and reigning J/70 world champion Peter Duncan knows from personal experience that working closely with Doyle Sails can seriously improve your performance.

'Awesome!' whooped Peter, newly crowned as J/70 world champion 2017 on the dockside in Porto Cervo, Sardinia. 'Everything seemed to go our way - it was just one of those weeks! This fleet has some really great talent, and the organisers and the yacht club have both done an amazing job.

'Most of all, though, I want to credit the crew. Victor, Jud and Willem have all been just fantastic.'

UBS 20th Jersey Regatta
The UBS 20th Jersey Regatta, held from Friday to Sunday, featured light winds and plenty of sunshine, in the main, but all races in a very busy programme were completed both to the organisers' and, more importantly, the competitors' satisfaction. This year, this flagship event hosted both the Spinlock IRC Channel Islands Championships and the British Kona One Championship.

Honours in the Class 1 cruiser/racer fleet went to Rhys Perkins' Archambault 35, Abracadabra, winning all but one race out of six in the face of fierce opposition,, clinching both the overall result and the Class 1 IRC Championship ahead of Alex Ohlsson and Neil Maclachlan's J109, Jai Ho, Conditions clearly did not suit David Myatt's 8 Metre, Erica, often a difficult boat to beat having to be content with third place.

Clearly on top form, this year's Coutts Quarter Ton Cup winner, Sam Laidlaw's Aguila won not only the Class overall with four out of six races but the overall Quarter Ton and Class 2 cruiser/racer result to clinch the Class 2 IRC Championship. Louise Morton's Quarter Tonner, Bullet, with two wins was a close second with Tom Hill's Belinda third. Of the Jersey Quarter Ton fleet, it was Tom Bombadil, now under new ownership and helmed by Steve Pearl,, that clinched fourth place, just two points behind Belinda. A close run thing, indeed.

Things were no less nail-bitng in the Kona One windsurfer class with James Leeming's Toothpick taking the class and the British Championship just one point ahead of Tim Laine's Speedy. Jersey's Justin Horton was third just two points behind.

Wight Shipyard One Ton Cup - FAST40+ Class
Niklas Zennstrom's Rán is the winner of the Wight Shipyard One Ton Cup. At a ceremony held at the Royal Ocean Racing Club's Clubhouse. RORC Racing Manager, Chris Stone welcomed Christophe Hinfray representing the owners of the trophy, the Cercle de la voile de Paris. Christophe presented the One Ton Cup to the victorious Rán crew.

Created in1899 by the Cercle de la voile de Paris (CVP), skippers from 12 nations have won the prestigious One Ton Cup over the last 119 years. Teams from France have won the cup on 13 occasions and British teams have been victorious 14 times. Niklas Zennstrom racing Rán in the 2018 edition has become the fifteenth Swedish skipper to win the One Ton Cup. The last Swede to win the One Ton Cup was Claës-Henrik Nordenskiöld's May Be VIII in 1959, long before any of the Rán crew were born.

Rán crew: Niklas Zennstrom, Tim Powell, Adrian Stead, Steve Hayles, Justin Slattery, Toby Iles, Connor Banks, Hamish Macdonald, Silas Nolan, Ellie Cumpsty, Tom Needham.

Going into the last day of the regatta, Rán had a huge lead of the competition. In the penultimate race, Rán was leading the fleet but hit the top mark and finished the race in tenth place. Bas de Voogd's Hitchhiker took the race win, to come within one point of challenging Peter Morton's Girls on Film for second place. Mike Bartholomew's Tokoloshe II was third scoring their second podium position for the regatta.

Rán finished the regatta in style scoring their sixth bullet in the nine race series to win the Wight Shipyard One Ton Cup. Girls on Film finished Race 9 in second place to hold off Hitchhiker into third for the series. Stewart Whitehead's Rebellion scored consistently throughout the regatta to finish fourth, and Tony Dickin's Jubilee covered Tokoloshe II in the last race to secure fifth place for the Wight Shipyard One Ton Cup.

Golden Globe Race: Jean-Luc Van Den Heede increases lead to 9 day advantage over Mark Slats
Following in Bernard Moitessier's wake? Australian Mark Sinclair made an impromptu stop in Table Bay to hand across films, just as French sailing legend Bernard Moitessier did during the inaugural GGR 50 years before – then inexplicably continued cruising around the Cape and up the east coast towards Port Elizabeth, rather than follow the fleet down into the Southern Ocean. Photo: Riaan Smit. Click on image to enlarge.

Golden Globe Race 73-year old Jean-Luc Van Den Heede continues to defy his age and best efforts of the chasing pack of Golden Globe Race skippers to extend his lead across the South Indian Ocean to 9+ days over the past week. The Frenchman is now a complete weather system ahead of his closest rivals and expects to pass Cape Leeuwin, the second of the three main Capes next weekend. He also remains on course for his compulsory stop in Hobart at the BoatShed.com film drop on October 3.

Before the start from Les Sables d'Olonne on July 1st, the best computer predictions suggested that the winner could complete a sub-200 day solo circumnavigation. Well, according to the YB tracker today, Jean-Luc's Rustler 36 Matmut will return to the Vendee port in 199 days! That is based on her 5.2knot average over the last 24 hours, which has to be optimistic, but with this septuagenarian, anything seems possible. Before today the worst thing to have happened has been a lost sailing croc, dropped overboard last week, but today Van Den Heede reported his first breakage. "The shackle connecting the halyard and top swivel on my staysail came undone. I had to climb the mast to the 2nd spreader to reconnect them - I'm too old to be doing this! He admitted.

1,100 miles astern, 2nd placed Dutchman Mark Slats sailing the rival Rustler 36 Ohpen Maverick, has dropped a further 300 miles behind Matmut during the past week. He has reported concerns about the state of his halyards, for without headsail roller furling systems, the constant changing of sails is causing considerable chafe. Another disadvantage is the need to drag the sails down below to repack them, which makes the inside of the boat both wet and cold.

There is much more of a fight for third place. The 13:00 report placed Gregor McGuckin's Biscay 36 Hanley Energy Endurance just 1 miles ahead of Abhilash Tomy's Indian Thuriya, a modern replica of Sir Robin Knox-Johnston's Suhaili. The Irishman texted: 'MID INDIAN OCEAN & ABHILASH IS IN SIGHT ABOUT A MILE AWAY!'

Thuriya is the surprise package in this 50th anniversary of the original Sunday Times Golden Globe Race. Even Sir Robin predicted that she would be slow compared to the production yachts but she and her skipper are proving to be exceptionally fast in the Southern Ocean, having moved up from 10th to challenge for 3rd place since rounding the Cape of Good Hope. -- Barry Pickthall
