Imerys Clean Energy take the gun
Phil Sharp's Class40 Imerys Clean Energy has taken line honours in the 2018 Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race in an elapsed time of 8 days 4 hours 14 minutes 49 seconds, winning the Class40 Division and setting a new world record in the race for yachts 40ft or under (subject to ratification). The team smashed the previous record by 15 hours. The victorious Imerys Clean Energy crew: Phil Sharp, Julien Pulvé, Pablo Santurdé and Sam Matson were met on the dock by friends, family and fans of the race.

"It hasn't really sunk in yet, but it is just fantastic to take line honours, the win in the Class40s, and break the world record!" exclaimed an elated Phil Sharp.

Tony Lawson's Class40 Concise 8, skippered by Jack Trigger was 39 miles behind as Imerys Clean Energy crossed the finish line. Concise 8 are expected to finish the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race tonight, at approximately 21:00 BST Monday 20 August.

International 14 World Championships - Day 5
Photos by Erik Simonson, www.h2oshots.com. Click on image for photo gallery.

WHAT Lots of worried faces in the boat park - it looked windy, very windy.. But PRO, Del Olsen, assured the International 14 skiff fleet that everything would settle down. Local knowledge proved right and a decisive fourth race for the Germans.

Georg Borkenstein and 'Big' Eike Dietrich lead from start to finish with the Brits and Australians, Daniel Holman/ Alex Knight and Lindsay Irwin/ Andrew Perry respectively taking second and third.

Lay Day tomorrow so plenty of boat repairs, resting weary muscles (and some heads). Race Five starts Wednesday with plenty more action on San Francisco Bay.

Per Elisa And Waverider Draw First Blood at Half Ton Classics Cup 2018 in Nieuwpoort
Nieuwpoort, Belgium: The opening day of the Half Ton Classics Cup in Nieuwpoort, Belgium brought overcast skies, fickle light winds and a big challenge for both the competitors and the Koninklijke Yachtclub Nieuwpoort's Race Committee. The Half Ton Class brings together the owners of vintage IOR boats built to the Half Ton rule to race under IRC handicap and features a wonderful mixture of "as original" and significantly updated boats as well as both family crews and top professional sailors. This year's event features sailors from across Europe and as far afield as Hobart, Tasmania.

On arrival in the start area there was very little wind with just the occasional zephyr of breeze rolling down the course from the north west. Fortunately as the start time approached the bands of breeze began to join up and a relatively steady 4-5 knots established itself across the course, allowing racing to get underway at 14.00 as planned.

With the wind remaining very unstable the race committee wisely decided to make leg three just a short beat to the finish. As they came through the line the teams were pleased to see the signals confirming that no attempt would be made to run a second race and instructing them to return to the marina.

Back ashore and with the handicap times corrected Per Elisa was confirmed as the overall race winner by a minute and twenty seven seconds from Checkmate XV with Red Cloud third.

The forecast for day two is for further light winds, but it is hoped that conditions will once again be sailable. The Race Committee will brief the competitors at 08.30 and, conditions permitting, will start the first of up to three races at 10.30.

The championship continues until Friday 24 August

Provisional Top Five After 1 Race
1. Per Elisa - 1
2. Checkmate XV - 2
3. Red Cloud - 3
4. Waverider - 4
5. Superhero - 5

Ten Skippers From The Usa And Down Under To Compete In Detroit Cup
Competitive international match race sailing comes to the Detroit River once again in the 11th annual edition of the 2018 Detroit Cup, held over August 23-26th. For each of the four days of the event, ten teams from Australia, New Zealand and the USA will do battle in equally-matched Ultimate 20 sportboats on the spectator-friendly waterfront of the event host, Bayview Yacht Club.

The Detroit Cup is the second of four stages on the USA GRAND SLAM series, a string of four consecutive match race regattas ranked at a Grade 2 level by World Sailing and held in Chicago, Detroit, and New York’s Long Island Sound. The winning team scored in all four events receives an invitation to the only Grade 1 event in the USA, the venerable Congressional Cup held in Long Beach, California.

The teams competing for the Detroit Cup this year include the following:

- Will Boulden and his team of Josh Wijohn and Taylor Blaugh from Royal Freshwater Bay YC in Perth, West Australia

- Clare Constanzo and her team of Jess Angus, Hannah Lanz and Ruby Scholten are entered representing Royal Prince Alfred YC in Newport on the east coast of Australia.

- Pearson Potts and his Yankee Creole Racing team of Max Lopez and Jeremy Macan is returning to Detroit Cup having earned a 4th place finish last year here at Bayview and being last year’s US Match Racing Champions.

- Chris Poole and his Riptide Racing team of Marcus Edegren and Patrick Norris will be returning to the Detroit Cup after a fifth-place finish last year. He is ranked 29th in the Open Rankings and hails from Seawanhaka Corinthian YC in Oyster Bay, NY.

- Finn Tapper is ranked 52nd in World Sailing’s Open Rankings and will be leading his team from the Cruising Club of Australia to his first entry at the Detroit Cup.

- James Wilson from the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and a subset of his travel team squad of Marco Hull, Dingo, Logan Andresen, and Tim Snedden will be competing at his first Detroit Cup as well.

- Another crew of Kiwis from RNZYS is the KNOTS Racing team skippered by Nick Egnot-Johnson, sailing with Sam Barnett and Zak Merton.

- A young team of former high school sailors have formed the Pickle Rick Racing team representing Chicago YC, with William Curtiss as skipper, RJ Porter trimming and Wade Wagner on the bow.

- Representing Bayview YC and last year’s runner-up in the Detroit Cup, Ryan Seago returns with a crew of experienced D Cup veterans: Matt Graham and Chris Cyr.

- Also representing Bayview is Will Cyr, who is also a veteran of numerous past D Cups.

Racing starts on Thursday, August 23rd and runs daily through Sunday, August 26th.

Record still to beat in 14th Palermo-Montecarlo offshore
Yacht Club Monaco Already established as a tradition, the annual 500nm Palermo-Montecarlo offshore race attracts a fleet of character and exception. Organised by Circolo della Vela Sicilia, Yacht Club de Monaco and Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, this year sees 55 boats on the start. And, again this year, it is a stage on the International Maxi Association (IMA) circuit.

The fleet leaves Gulf of Mondello (Sicily) on 21 August to ascend the Mediterranean via a passage gate off Porto Cervo (Sardinia), up the Corsican coast to Monaco. The record to beat, held since 2015 by the 100-ft Maxi Esimit Europa 2, is 47 hours 46 minutes 48 seconds. There’s plenty of challengers, including Bryon Ehrhart’s Lucky, 2017 line honours winner; George David’s Rambler 88 whose crew includes 4-time America’s Cup winner, Brad Butterworth; and the YCM’s Adalberto Miani accompanied by son Guido and grandson Daniel on Art Spirit of Porto Piccolo. First in the 49th Barcolana, this boat is one of the favourites.

Sailing alongside professionals is a team of young sailors from the Yacht Club de Monaco, racing under the aegis of the Sailing Youth Offshore Academy U25, with 3 from the Sicilian club on a First 50 Freedom. Age 14-22 and supervised by 2 coaches from the 2 clubs, the goal is to immerse them in the thrills of offshore racing, part of the YCM’s policy to get young people into sailing and the yachting professions via its training centre, La Belle Classe Academy. Prize-giving is on 26 August 2018.

Foiling fleets to fly into Cardiff for the only UK Act of the 2018 Extreme Sailing Series
From 24-27 August, the Extreme Sailing Series super-speed, hydro-foiling GC32 and double-handed Flying Phantom fleets will foil into Cardiff Bay as the headline act of Cardiff Harbour Festival.

Racing on an amphitheatre style, inland course with fickle and fluctuating winds, the crews are sure to be challenged.

"Cardiff is the smallest and most intense racecourse of all the venues this year," explained Rasmus Kostner, skipper of last year's season and Cardiff Act winners, SAP Extreme Sailing Team. "It is also one of the most unpredictable courses so you need to be ready for some quick decisions. It makes Cardiff an interesting place to race."

SAP Extreme Sailing Team may have won the UK Act last year and currently sail in second place overall, but British squad INEOS Rebels are keen to bring new blood to the Cardiff podium this time around, following a third place finish in Cascais, Portugal.

Top dogs Alinghi will also be looking for another podium finish in Wales. The Swiss team currently leads the fleet, having taken three out of four wins so far this year. A force to be reckoned with, this elite team will be taking no prisoners on their quest for the coveted Cardiff trophy.

With a mixture of pride and determination, co-skipper and helm Arnaud Psarofaghis said: "The team has done a really good job to lead the fleet so far, but now the real deal starts. We will push harder than ever before to maintain our lead."

The event's free-to-enter Fan Zone is located next to Britannia Park and the Norwegian Church at Cardiff Bay. Offering a live music stage, food and drink stalls, walkabout characters, an Eco Lounge containing furniture cleverly upcycled from debris collected in the bay, and much more, the Fan Zone caters for all, ensuring visitors enjoy their Extreme Sailing Series experience to the full.

GC32 racing will run daily from 14:00 until 17:00 BST/UTC+1, and will be streamed LIVE on Facebook and YouTube on the final two days of the event.

The Cardiff Act is supported by Cardiff Council, the Welsh Government and Cardiff Harbour Authority.

New Moon begins 5.5 Metre World Championship with convincing win
The 2018 International 5.5 Metre World Championship at the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes, UK opened Monday with one afternoon race that was won by New Moon, BAH 21, (Mark Holowesko, Christoph Burger, Peter Vlasov).

Nearly, seventy years ago the first 5.5 Metre was launched in the Solent by Charles E Nicholson of the famous Camper & Nicholson yard. On the same waters today, 25 International 5.5 Metres, from ten nations, most looking very different from that first boat, began competing in the 56th world championship of the class, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2018. The Rule that governs how a 5.5 Metre is designed, was written in 1948 and the first boat, The Deb K-1, was designed in 1948 by Nicholson. That boat was first sailed in the Solent in 1949.

The day brought a range of English weather with early morning rain and light winds that changed through the afternoon to briefly bring moderate south-westerlies and some broken sunshine. It was a gentle start to what is expected to be a fiercely competitive week of racing.

Emirates Team New Zealand's Clever Solution
The 2017 America's Cup had similar rules forbidding computer controls and requiring the sailors to control the foils, rudder, wing and jib. But Team New Zealand found a way to respect the rules by providing a very clever form of computer aided guidance to the crew. There was no restriction on gauges and readouts on board the AC50 yachts while racing, but the crew was required to operate the controls. They used a computer controlled system on their test boat to learn the best way to adjust the foils. Then they used the data from their testing to develop a system for the AC50 race boat that did everything the computer system did except for actually controlling the foils. The race boat had a tablet that showed a moving dot representing the best foil setting. A separate, transparent screen was mounted just above the tablet and connected to the foil controls with a separate cable. This physical and electrical separation complied with the rules. A sailor could follow the dot on the tablet, touching only the separate transparent screen, and control the foils.

Naturally this system was top secret (except for the measurers, who had to approve it), but we got a good look at it when the Kiwis capsized. In the photo below, cyclor Blair Tuke had been thrown out of the boat, but you can clearly see the tablet and control screen. Note the two cables. The other helmet you see in that cockpit is wing trimmer Glenn Ashby, hanging on to Tuke's seatpost. Ashby had his own control system to adjust camber and twist of the wing. Helmsman Pete Burling also managed to stay in the boat during the capsize. -- Jack Griffin in Cup Experience

Laser Radial Young Worlds: Challenging waves and nice conditions
The waves and winds of 15 to 17 knots did let the dinghies dance on the water on Monday for the first races of the Laser Radial Youth World Championships in Kiel Schilksee and lifted them around marks. They went onto the downwind with quite some speed. Who had to give way to others, was fighting not to capsize. Laura Schewe (Kiel), Josh Armit (NZL) and Ludvig Lindqvist (SWE) did handle the conditions the best.

While Emma Savlon from the Netherlands could keep Laura Schewe at bay in the first race of the day and win, she was disqualified in the second race and thus was on rank 47 overall after the first day. Laura Schewe however did not make any mistakes and improved her result in the second race, did win it and is now also leading the fleet in the overall ranking.

Races are set from Monday, 20. August, until Saturday, 25. August. Each day, there will be two races. After the qualification races, there will be final races in the groups Gold, Silver and Bronze starting on Thursday. For this, all qualification groups will have to sail four races (including a discard). The minimum of four races is also a prerequisite to assign the title World Champion.
