Return Of The Flying Spaniard On Thursday morning, still averaging 12 knots in the Doldrums, he caught Bertrand De Broc (Votre nom autour du monde) and Arnaud Bossieres (Akena Verandas), who has been averaging around five knots for the last day and a half. Both lie further to the west and whilst that proved successful for Mike Golding's group of three, it has stalled Bossieres even more completely than the way the top six were stalled in the east two days ago. One of the sayings of the Doldrums is that 'west is best', but Sanso, the 43-year-old from Majorca, has prospered even further east than the lead group. In his second Vendee Globe after being forced to retire from the 2000-01 edition, is making full use of having one of the six new boats - and the only new British one, by Owen-Clarke design - in the race. Meanwhile, back on Tenerife, Zbigniew 'Gutek' Gutkowski (ENERGA) arrived at around 0130hrs (French time) yesterday after becoming the sixth boat of 20 who started to retire ENERGA is moored in Santa Cruz marina on Tenerife. Gutek and his boat captain, Maciek Marczewski, are inspecting his boat and assessing the reasons for the electronics failure. As they head south with steady easterlies, the leading group of six have the chance to get their boats ready for the sling shot into the Southern Ocean. Alex Thomson (Hugo Boss) had reopened his Atlantic workshop to fix his hydrogenerator, so he will be able to charge his batteries on both tacks. Top ten rankings as of Thursday 22 November 2012, 20h00 (FR) 1. Banque Populaire, Armel Le Cleac'h Alex Thomson Vilified For Race Protest There are scores of negative and potentially libellous comments about Thomson on the Vendee Globe website, and it's a great shame to see a competitor so exposed for want of a full explanation of how sailing and its rules work. Back on 12 November, Alex Thomson gybed to avoid the TSS, as is required by international collision regulations and the race's sailing instructions, only to see a number of other skippers gain a tactical advantage by carrying on. He reportedly contacted the race committee, which informed him that in order to take action he'd have to protest. So he did, and the result is the penalties announced today: a two-hour stop-and-go penalty for Synerciel, Mirabaud, Acciona, Initiatives Coeur and Energa, a 30 minute penalty for Mike Golding on Gamesa and 20 minutes for JP Dick on Virbac Paprec 3. I'm not sure how this sliding scale of penalties was calculated. But Mike Golding has to take a penalty 300% of his time in the TSS, whereas the boat or boats in it for three hours have a 67% penalty. I'm told by his team that Golding is 'considering his position'. As far as I know the only option that would be open to him is to appeal to the committee or to request redress on the basis that he has been comparatively disadvantaged. It might also be better if more race organisers followed the example of the MOD70 and Figaro races by marking certain areas as complete no-go zones for competitors with a standard, swingeing penalty for straying there. Racing under the RORC'S IRC Rule, the overall winner of the race was announced as Doug Worrall's First 36.7, Shahrazad, which also claimed line honours. "We stayed out of trouble and kept going, it was as simple as that." Suggested Doug Worral "We stayed offshore at the start in the Arabian Gulf, to keep away from fishing nets and we got the added bonus of more wind than the yachts that chose the inshore option. Later in the race, after we rounded Khasab, we could see a terrific storm ahead and we prepared to reef and eased sheets to avoid it, this good seamanship was rewarded as we managed to skirt around the edge of the storm and in control, we had excellent boat speed. I have always maintained that the last 12 hours of an offshore race is crucial; you are tired and that is when the mistakes can creep in but we kept focused and finished off the job. I am now looking forward to race to Khasab." Vice Commodore of the Dubai Offshore Sailing Club, Calum McKie racing his Grand Soleil 37, Boracic was second. Matt Britton's J/92 Privateer was the smallest yacht in the class and claimed third overall, short-handed it would have been tough going on the 30-foot yacht. With all of the yachts in the Dubai Muscat Race finished, attention in Muscat has turned to two days of inshore racing. Hundreds of sailors from Oman and overseas are taking part in the reatta. However, next Saturday, 24th November marks the return to offshore action with start of 230-mile Bank of Beirut Chairman's Cup Race to Khasab with a prize fund of $50,000, generously donated by the title sponsor. Founder Henri Strzelecki MBE (or Mr Henri as he became universally known) spotted the potential of the 1960's wonder-fabric Bri-Nylon® to create the fore-runner of all modern Foul Weather Gear and so formed Henri Lloyd Limited on 1st June 1963. This was just the beginning of "Mr Henri's" pioneering ways and he went on to develop groundbreaking design and safety features combined with innovative use of fabrics. This included the use of Velcro® as a closure on clothing, the joint development of nylon non-corrosive zips with Swiss firm Riri®, the incorporation of safety harnesses as an integral part of a jacket and the introduction of hand taped seams all of which revolutionised the world of sailing apparel. Henri-Lloyd has received critical acclaim for the creation of innovative performance products winning numerous DAME and Environmental awards for products such as Blue Eco. Whilst also establishing the brand in both Technical Marine and Premium Lifestyle markets in over 50 countries worldwide. ----------------------------------------------------- It's already being billed by the organiser as a vote of confidence for the industry - if the exhibitor and visitor numbers are anything to go at this year's Marine Equipment Trade Show (METS), which drew to a close in Amsterdam yesterday afternoon, then it would be hard to argue with that verdict. Final visitor attendance totalled *19,617, up from 19,232 last year, and just shy of the milestone 20,000 that show Theo Lingmont, director of international exhibitions for Amsterdam RAI, predicted was within reach in his opening to the show celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. International attendance was up 2 per cent on last year, whilst exhbitors numbered 1,318, only marginally short of its record breaking 1,331 in 2011. According to the RAI, an unprecedented 43 per cent of exhibitors had already pre-booked stand space for 2013 before this edition had drawn to a close. METS 2013 will be held 19-20-21 November 2013 in Amsterdam RAI Convention Centre. ----------------------------------------------------- Ocean Safety has acquired the assets and rights of the Australian Para Anchor brand. The company will show the Para Anchor range of vessel stabilising anchors and drogues at METS. Ocean Safety now designs and manufactures the Para Anchor range in the UK and has already increased capacity to meet expanding demand. The acquisition significantly expands the manufacturing facility at Ocean Safety. A Para Anchor is designed to provide sufficient power to hold the bow of a vessel head to wind in the worst storm conditions, greatly reducing the risk of broaching, capsizing or rolling, keeping the boat comfortable and stable. ----------------------------------------------------- The 11th International Sailing Summit (ISS) is scheduled to take place at Sandringham Yacht Club on the 3nd December 2012 as part of Sail Melbourne's ISAF Sailing World Cup Program.
